T-72M2 Moderna

The Moderna was not a clean-sheet tank. It was a late Cold War / post-Cold-War modernization path for the Czechoslovak-built T-72M1, carried forward in Slovakia after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia.

Historical overview

The Moderna was not a clean-sheet tank. It was a late Cold War / post-Cold-War modernization path for the Czechoslovak-built T-72M1, carried forward in Slovakia after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. Sources

Historically, its significance is not battlefield performance—it had no documented combat record—but as an industrial artifact. The project connected Slovak firms and institutions such as ZTS/ZŤS Martin, Dubnica/Trenčín-associated defense enterprises, Konštrukta Defence, EVPÚ Nová Dubnica, and foreign electronics suppliers such as SAGEM/SFIM and Fotona. The most important variant boundary is between the early T-72M2E / T-72M1 Moderna demonstrator, usually associated with two side-mounted 20 mm Oerlikon/Contraves KAA-type autocannons, and the later T-72M2 Moderna prototype with one 30 mm 2A42 autocannon and a more mature protection/fire-control package. Moderna was technically ambitious, visually distinctive, and well suited to a narrative about “almost modernized” post-Warsaw-Pact armor. It failed to become an operational fleet standard because the Slovak Army and export market could not support a production run at the required cost and scale. Current Slovak plans emphasize replacing aged T-72M1s rather than reviving T-72M2-type modernization. Sources

The strategic setting was the collapse of the Warsaw Pact, the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, and the contraction of Central European heavy-armored forces. Czechoslovakia had built T-72M1 tanks under license, with Army Guide summarizing the split between ZTS Martin for chassis work and ZTS Dubnica nad Váhom for turrets. After the state split, Slovakia inherited a large part of the former tank-industrial base but not a large enough domestic procurement market to sustain major tank production on Cold War terms. Doctrinally, Moderna belonged to the 1990s logic of “upgrade instead of replace.” This was attractive for states that possessed T-72 fleets but lacked the funds for Leopard 2, M1 Abrams, Leclerc, Challenger 2, or T-80U/T-90 procurement. Slovak firms had inherited competence in T-72 production, repair, optics, protection modules, and vehicle integration, but the export market was crowded by Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Czech, Israeli, and Western modernization packages. Development and variants

Published accounts describe the subject as a prototype upgrade family centered on the Slovak T-72M2 Moderna, not as a mass-produced vehicle family. It includes the original T-72M1 parent context only where necessary to explain lineage, the early T-72M2E/T-72M1 Moderna configuration, the final T-72M2 Moderna demonstrator/prototype, and the main technologies integrated or proposed. The design origin lay in late Czechoslovak modernization studies. The Valka 2000 article states that the first steps toward T-72 modernization were taken by the federal army, that French defense companies such as SAGEM and Thomson-CSF were considered, and that technical-tactical requirements focused on crew protection, accuracy, survivability, and retention of original T-72 components where possible. After Czechoslovakia split, the Slovak path produced the Moderna. One Valka development post describes a 1994 IDET appearance at Brno under the T-72M2E “Moderna” designation and ties the early configuration to two 20 mm Oerlikon-Contraves KAA autocannons. This early stage is described as less certain because the source is a detailed forum contribution, but it aligns with Army Guide’s description of a T-72M1 Moderna prototype fitted with locally developed ERA, twin 20 mm guns, and a new computerized FCS. The later form replaced the twin 20 mm arrangement with a single 30 mm 2A42 autocannon on the right side of the turret and incorporated the modernized 125 mm gun, improved sights, DYNAS ERA, laser warning, smoke dischargers, fire suppression, updated radios/intercom, and automotive improvements. Army Guide states that one prototype of the T-72M2 version was completed and tested. Sources

A 2000 article states that one T-72M2 appeared in the Slovak Army exhibit at IDEE 2000 after troop trials and that a verification series was being prepared; it also cautions that everything depended on the Slovak Army’s ability to pay for the modernization. This is a key source for the program’s near-production moment, but no strong evidence in the sources reviewed here shows that a production or verification series was actually completed. Sources

The program was therefore arrested at the prototype/demonstrator stage. Its technical results, however, did not disappear entirely: the 2A46MS gun, originally linked to T-72M2 modernization, is described by Valka as later achieving export success in the Malaysian PT-91M Pendekar program. Sources

Design and performance

The vehicle retained the classic T-72 layout: driver in the front hull, two-man turret with commander and gunner, carousel autoloader under the turret, and engine/transmission in the rear. The hull remained that of the T-72M1 family, with additional ERA and side protection added in the Moderna package. The program reportedly included improved hull-floor/driver protection measures, including a suspended driver seat, and retained the vehicle’s ability to ford shallow water without preparation and deeper water with preparation. The turret was the visual center of the modernization. The early demonstrator carried two side-mounted 20 mm autocannons. The later T-72M2 configuration carried a right-side 30 mm 2A42 autocannon, enlarged sighting equipment, DYNAS ERA blocks, laser-warning and smoke systems, and a changed external silhouette. Base protection came from the T-72M1 hull and turret with a DYNAS explosive reactive armor package. Valka technical notes list the DYNAS package as about 2,200 kg in total, distributed across turret, hull front, and hull sides. Claims that DYNAS defeated tandem shaped-charge threats or reduced modern APFSDS penetration represents manufacturer/secondary-source performance claims, not independently verified battlefield results. The final Moderna is usually associated with the Slovak 125 mm 2A46MS smoothbore gun; Army Guide labels the T-72M2 gun as a modernized 125 mm 2A46M2. Sources

The final prototype combined the 125 mm gun with a 7.62 mm TK vz.95 coaxial machine gun and one 30 mm 2A42 autocannon, with the latter intended for low-flying aircraft, helicopters, light armored targets, and other targets where the main gun was inefficient. Valka sources list 39 rounds for the 125 mm gun, including 22 in the autoloader, about 2,000 rounds for the 7.62 mm machine gun, and about 250 rounds for the 30 mm 2A42. The FCS package evolved across stages. Sources identify computerized fire control, ballistic computing, thermal sights, command panoramic sighting, meteorological and target sensors, and integration between the main gun and the 30 mm autocannon. The commander’s equipment is identified as the SFIM/SAGEM MVS 580 day/night panoramic observation/aiming system with laser range finder. The gunner retained a TPD-K1 day sight/laser rangefinder and gained the TIGS day/night thermal sight, while the driver received an NV-3P passive night device. The final prototype is generally described with the S12U diesel, usually given as 625 kW or about 838–850 hp, and modified T-72-type transmission arrangements. Higher-power engine references appear in some accounts but were not verified as production-standard. [VALKA-MODERNA; VALKA-2000] Sources

The T-72 torsion-bar running gear and six-roadwheel layout were retained. The modernization added weight, so the mobility requirement was to keep acceptable road and cross-country performance rather than radically redesign the suspension. Sources

Valka technical data gives road speed around 60 km/h, cross-country speed about 35–45 km/h, road range about 620 km, and cross-country range about 430–560 km. Crew remained three. Ergonomic upgrades included driver instrumentation, a suspended driver seat, improved night driving device, and better crew-survivability systems. Sources refer to replacement of older R-123/R-124 sets and installation of modern radio/intercom equipment. Valka descriptions mention Panther 2000-V, Jaguar/BCC 600, and RF1350 DICOM/BCC 600 in different contexts. The vehicle combined passive armor, DYNAS ERA, the GALIX 80 mm smoke/aerosol-launching system, LIRD-series laser-warning equipment, DEUGRA fire detection/suppression, NBC protection, and mine-protection/driver-seat measures. Factories and firms: the broader T-72M1 industrial base included ZTS Martin for chassis work and ZTS Dubnica nad Váhom for turret work during the Czechoslovak period. After the state split, Army Guide describes MBT work as concentrated at ZTS Tees Martin in Slovakia. Valka sources additionally identify VOP 027 Trenčín as the finalist/repair-and-modernization integrator for the Slovak Army path and mention domestic contributors such as Konštrukta Defence and EVPÚ Nová Dubnica. Production timeline: the available sources support a modernization timeline rather than a production timeline. Late federal requirements and foreign proposals appear before the split; the early demonstrator appears around 1994; the more mature T-72M2 appears at IDEE 2000; then the program fades without a confirmed production order. Bottlenecks: the largest bottleneck was not a single component but program economics. A small domestic order would have had to absorb integration, testing, training, spares, and sustainment costs for a hybrid Slovak/Soviet/Western package. Export customers could choose competing Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Czech, Israeli, or Western programs. The 2000 Valka article explicitly tied further progress to the Slovak Army’s ability to pay. Myths versus documented evidence: popular video-game and internet discussions often treat Moderna as a fully fielded “super T-72.” The evidence supports a more restrained interpretation: a serious, technically interesting prototype whose production and combat effectiveness were never validated at fleet scale. Legacy and historical evidence

Against contemporaries, Moderna belongs with the Polish PT-91/Twardy, Czech T-72M4CZ, Ukrainian T-72AG/T-72MP, and Russian T-72B/T-90-adjacent modernization market rather than with clean-sheet Western MBTs. Its comparative advantage was a high-visibility, heavily equipped demonstration package. Its comparative disadvantage was the absence of a large domestic production order and the difficulty of competing in a saturated upgrade market. Sources

Moderna’s direct influence on tank forces was limited because it did not enter serial production. Its indirect legacy is more interesting: it preserved a snapshot of Slovak post-Cold-War defense-industrial ambition and showed how small states tried to combine inherited Soviet platforms with Western/Slovenian/Slovak electronics and protection packages. The 2A46MS gun is a clearer component legacy. Valka describes the gun as originally intended for the Slovak T-72M2 and later used with export success in the PT-91M Pendekar for Malaysia.
