The Ajeya was not a clean-sheet Indian tank. It was an Indian T-72M/T-72M1 family: Soviet in origin, Indian in production, overhaul, integration, and long-term tactical importance.

Historical overview

The Ajeya was not a clean-sheet Indian tank. It was an Indian T-72M/T-72M1 family: Soviet in origin, Indian in production, overhaul, integration, and long-term tactical importance. Its core package - low silhouette, three-man crew, 125 mm smoothbore gun, automatic carousel loader, diesel mobility, and compact Soviet-style layout - gave India a modern main battle tank in quantity far earlier than the Arjun could deliver. Ajeya was a pragmatic workhorse. It gave India a large, upgradeable, industrially supportable MBT force. Its enduring value came less from single-vehicle superiority than from numbers, crew familiarity, spares infrastructure, and the ability to absorb incremental Indian improvements. Ajeya retained the Soviet T-72 layout: driver in the front hull, turret fighting compartment in the center with commander and gunner, engine/transmission compartment at the rear, and a three-man crew enabled by the carousel autoloader. The hull is a welded, low-slung armoured box with sloped glacis, driver station forward, ammunition and autoloader components within the fighting compartment, and rear powerpack. Official AVNL descriptions identify hull, turret, weapons/fire-control system, power unit, power transmission, track-and-suspension system, electrical equipment, communications, and special equipment as the tank's major components. Baseline T-72M/M1 fire-control fit is dated by current standards. Indian industry support includes Opto Electronics Factory Dehradun precision opto-mechanical/electronic instruments for T-72 sighting and fire control, while secondary accounts of Combat Improved Ajeya discuss imported/modern thermal fire-control packages. The crew of three lowers silhouette and manpower demands but produces the classic T-72 trade-off: tight internal volume, commander/gunner workload pressures, and ammunition stowage near the crew. AVNL lists communication facilities as basic tank components. Secondary descriptions of Combat Improved Ajeya mention communications upgrades, but exact radio models and fleet distribution require Indian Army or factory configuration documents not available in the open sources used here. Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi is the central Indian industrial site in the open sources used for Ajeya. AVNL records rolling out Vijayanta by HVF in 1966, overhauled T-72 in 1983, Ajeya by HVF in 1984, BLT and Trawl T-72 in 2017, and a first batch of T-72 OH-II (Ajeya) in 2019. Sources
