Emergency production value in a tank already approaching obsolescence
The T-70 was the Soviet Union’s final mass-produced wartime light tank and an emergency answer to industrial disruption after the losses of 1941. The safest family-level production statement is that roughly 8,200 T-70s were built in 1942–43. Published totals of 8,226 and 8,231 differ slightly. The cited evidence does not fully establish whether prototypes, acceptance dates, or late vehicles account for the difference. Combat adequacy, Kursk, and the move away from wartime light tanks
The T-70 served because it was available, small, and sometimes useful in reconnaissance, infantry support, security, difficult terrain, and local armored engagements. It could exploit concealment and could threaten light vehicles or vulnerable aspects of heavier tanks.
