T-38

The T-38 was a Soviet amphibious reconnaissance tank developed from experience with the T-37A.

Identity and intended mission

The T-38 was a Soviet amphibious reconnaissance tank developed from experience with the T-37A. It combined a small two-man crew, machine-gun armament and the ability to cross suitable water obstacles. Published accounts describe amphibious scouting and communication with larger formations as the intended mission, rather than describing the vehicle as a light substitute for a normal line tank. The family includes the standard tank, radio-equipped records, a modernization line and later gun-rearmed vehicles whose naming and chronology remain disputed. The SU-45 project shares a development relationship but is not another ordinary T-38 scout. Likewise, the T-37A and T-40 have their own identities. The amphibious development line links separate vehicles with different production totals, specifications, and preserved examples. Sources

Development and modernization

Accounts place development in 1935 under the Factory No. 37 program associated with Nikolai Astrov, with acceptance on 29 February 1936. A lower, broader hull and a changed crew arrangement sought to improve on the predecessor. The turret was placed to the left and the driver's station to the right. These changes did not eliminate the difficulties of making a very small tank both a useful land scout and a stable floating vehicle. Sources

Trials and service exposed limited buoyancy, track problems and overheating. The later M1/M2 modernization work is associated with a GAZ M1 engine and components related to the Komsomolets tractor. The number completed and the exact acceptance status remain uncertain. A drawing or trial designation cannot establish a serial-production claim. Similarly, the overloaded SU-45 experiment belongs to a separate development record rather than an assumed cannon-armed production alternative. Sources

Hull, crew and protection

The tank's boat-like hull provided buoyancy while accommodating the driver, commander and automotive equipment. The source describes rolled plate joined by riveting and welding, with thin armor suited to a lightly protected reconnaissance vehicle. Sources

The commander also operated the turret weapon and carried a substantial observation and coordination burden. Restricted space and visibility mattered both afloat and on land. Limited reserve buoyancy meant that crew loading, equipment changes and water conditions could have disproportionate effects. Accounts record some later added-protection discussion, but this is not evidence of a universal armor-upgrade standard or a modern protection system. Sources

Armament, radio and rearmament questions

The standard weapon was a DT machine gun, with approximately 1,512 rounds given in the source. That armament suited limited reconnaissance encounters and self-defense, not sustained anti-tank fighting. Radio-equipped T-38RT records are important to the mission, but the extent of 71-TK-1 installation and the number so equipped remain uncertain. Most vehicles are not established to carry the same communications fit merely because a radio version existed. Sources

The later 20 mm rearmament account is treated separately. The account follows a source argument placing important conversions in 1943–1944 in the Far East and questioning a simple prewar T-38Sh story. Exact converted quantities, unit allocation, nomenclature and weapon installations still need primary corroboration. The rearmed ammunition and sight figures therefore stay with that source-specific configuration; they are not substituted for standard T-38 values. Sources

Automotive system and amphibious limits

The standard vehicle used the GAZ AA petrol engine rated at about 40 hp in the cited sources, while the modernization line used a different powerplant. The running gear is described through paired bogies and a front drive sprocket. Movement on water depended on separate propulsion and steering arrangements that deserve their own technical illustrations, rather than being inferred from a general exterior view. Sources

Representative source speeds are about 40 km/h on roads and 6 km/h afloat. Neither establishes safe performance in every current, bank approach or loading condition. Buoyancy margin, water ingress, track retention and cooling limited the design. A better-engine entry does not establish the final performance of an untested or poorly documented configuration, and derivative figures have not been silently filled from the standard tank. Sources

Manufacture and inventory boundaries

Published accounts give several production statements: about 1,300 in the available accounts, 1,340 in a commonly cited breakdown and a wider published range of roughly 1,200–1,500. The 1,340 calculation combines 1,228 for 1936–1937 and 112 for 1939. This is a source ledger to test, not an independently reconciled final total. The interruption in production and the limited modernization work require explicit dating. Sources

A June 1941 inventory figure of 1,143 is not equivalent to either total manufacture or combat-ready strength. Storage, repair, training allocation, losses and transfers affect those categories differently. The operator records include Soviet service and captured Finnish examples. One water-crossing photograph supports the existence of the depicted vehicle in that context, not a fleet quantity or the full chronology of Finnish use. Sources

Service and assessment

The source account includes the Winter War, losses and emergency employment in 1941, and reported later use such as the Svir crossing period. It also discusses Far Eastern inventories and rearmament. These references do not prove that every surviving tank fought in every named campaign. Unit records are still required to distinguish holdings, exercises, transport, deployed strength and actual combat action. Sources

The T-38's assessment depends on its role. Small size and amphibious movement could be useful for scouting, yet light protection, limited armament and a two-man workload made forced infantry-support employment particularly hazardous. The T-40 successor addressed a different stage of the same problem, rather than making the T-38 a simple failed prototype. Preserved vehicles and parade photographs remain valuable visual evidence when distinguished from combat views and when later paint, missing equipment and inaccurate captions are made explicit.
