The five-turret concept
The T-35 was a Soviet heavy breakthrough tank organized around five turrets. A central turret carried the 76.2 mm weapon; two other turrets carried 45 mm guns, and smaller positions added machine-gun fire. The design sought to engage several kinds of targets around a large armored vehicle, but distributing weapons also distributed observation, ammunition handling and command responsibilities. Sources
The available evidence separates the initial prototypes from the production design, usually called T-35A. Later tanks introduced further changes, including conical turrets. These are not interchangeable configurations: crew, weight, armor and fittings vary across the program. Even the family total remains source-sensitive, with the published account’s 61 differing from accounts that combine either 59 or 60 series vehicles with two prototypes. Experimental origins and acceptance
Development arose from the Soviet search for a heavy vehicle able to reinforce attacks against established defenses. Work associated with OKMO and the Bolshevik plant drew on contemporary experimentation, including the broader environment surrounding Grotte’s projects. That context does not establish that every feature came from a single foreign designer or that the production tank was merely another project under a new name. Sources
The first prototype appeared in 1932. A second vehicle followed with mechanical changes, including the M-17 engine, before acceptance in August 1933. The production tank was substantially redesigned and lengthened rather than built as an unchanged copy of the first demonstrator. Manufacturing then centered on Kharkov. Sources
Hull and fighting compartments
The long hull supported the main turret above the smaller surrounding turrets. This layered arrangement created a large silhouette and separated crew members into several fighting positions. Protective side structures enclosed much of the running gear. Riveted and welded construction details, the shape of individual turrets and the layout of fittings changed as the design developed. Early protection was not uniformly heavy despite the vehicle’s classification. Published accounts describe modest thicknesses for much of the initial armor and differing figures for later frontal protection. “Heavy tank” describes the vehicle’s weight and role; it does not establish an invulnerable armor envelope. The same caution applies to identifying a museum vehicle’s present finish as its original production appearance. Sources
Armament and coordination
The main armament was a short 76.2 mm gun of the KT family, supported by two 45 mm guns and several DT machine guns. The accounts record disagreements over precise gun designations and ammunition capacities. Small differences between quoted ammunition figures can reflect source practice or configuration; they cannot be silently rounded into an apparently exact universal load. Sources
The number of weapons did not remove the need for coordinated fire. Crew members had distinct views from separated stations, and the commander had to direct a large group while observing the battlefield. Published accounts describe this command burden as a central limitation of the multi-turret arrangement. A traverse or firing characteristic quoted for the main turret also cannot automatically describe the smaller turrets. Sources
Power, mobility and reliability
Production configurations used the M-17 engine, commonly described in the available evidence at about 500 hp. Weight rose across the program, with cited values ranging from the mid-40-ton class to more than 50 tons for heavier states. These figures belong to their respective prototypes or series configurations; combining the lowest weight with a later vehicle’s protection would create a tank that did not exist. Sources
The running gear and transmission carried a demanding load. The account discusses shortcomings in filters, gearing and final drives, including reported mid-1930s technical assessments. Those reports need direct documentary consultation before every detail can be treated as established. The broader distinction is already important: nominal road speed is not sustained reliability, and completing a parade or a short demonstration does not establish suitability for repeated long movements under operational pressure. Manufacture and changing configurations
The prototype-to-production transition and subsequent modifications make the T-35 ledger more complicated than a single headline number. The working sources disagree over the treatment of prototypes and the series total. They also differ over whether the late conical-turret group contained six or ten vehicles and over its designation. Conversions and changing designations did not necessarily correspond to additional manufactured vehicles. An early tank photographed after modifications remains the same hull, and a display or captured-state photograph does not create another manufactured example. This approach leaves room for substantial configuration articles while preventing the family count from growing through aliases, rebuilding and repeated photographs. Sources
Service, 1941 losses and captured examples
The T-35 had a prominent place in Soviet demonstrations, training and heavy-tank formations. Its imposing appearance made it a recognizable symbol of mechanization, but the available evidence does not equate public visibility with extensive combat experience. Claims about participation in Poland or the Winter War remain uncertain, including separation from the SMK and T-100 prototypes. Sources
The best-supported combat framework concerns the 1941 fighting involving the 34th Tank Division. Accounts emphasize the difficulty of distinguishing mechanical breakdown, abandonment during movement and damage by enemy fire in individual loss narratives. Captured photographs provide valuable evidence of particular vehicle states, but German possession or examination is not equivalent to regular German frontline service. Unsupported stories of later combat cannot reliably fill gaps in the documented operational career. Sources
Legacy and the surviving visual record
The T-35 is an important example of the interwar attempt to combine several fighting positions in one heavy vehicle. Its history exposes the gap between a weapon arrangement that looked comprehensive on paper and the mechanical, crew and organizational work needed to use it effectively.
