T-27 Tankette

The T-27 was a small, two-man Soviet tankette derived from the Carden-Loyd concept.

Overview and role

The T-27 was a small, two-man Soviet tankette derived from the Carden-Loyd concept. It combined a tracked chassis with light armor and a forward-firing machine gun, offering a relatively inexpensive vehicle for reconnaissance, liaison, training and selected support tasks. It did not provide the rotating gun turret, crew capacity or protection of a larger light tank. Sources

The account includes both the production tankette and experiments that reused its chassis. Those experiments broaden its development history but cannot make the standard vehicle appear to have carried every proposed weapon or accessory. The family also needs to remain distinct from the later amphibious reconnaissance tanks that addressed some of its limitations. Sources

Acquisition and Soviet development

The Soviet tankette program followed interest in the British Carden-Loyd vehicle and the purchase of examples for evaluation. Published accounts give an important date distinction: 1929 appears in the wider procurement story, while one cited account places acquisition of twenty-six vehicles in 1930. These statements cannot be compressed into a single exact purchase event until the relevant contracts and delivery records are checked. Sources

Development adapted the design to Soviet production and operating requirements. Accounts associate Kozyrev and Sirken with the work and give 13 February 1931 as the adoption date. The division of manufacturing responsibility among the Moscow line, later Factory No. 37, Bolshevik, and GAZ is less fully documented. Sources

Series manufacture is generally placed in 1931–1933. Later references to a T-27-based vehicle do not prove that standard tankette production continued unchanged. Trials and rebuilding could continue after the main series had ended. Sources

Crew compartment, protection and weapon

The tankette had a low hull with the driver and commander-gunner accommodated side by side. Its fixed forward weapon installation limited traverse and required the driver to help bring the vehicle onto a target. That made observation and crew coordination fundamental to effective use. A small silhouette and low weight were advantages in some situations, but the cramped compartment restricted visibility and the space available for additional equipment. Sources

The ordinary armament was a 7.62 mm DT machine gun. A requirement for future equipment is not evidence that the production T-27 already carried it. Cannon, recoilless-weapon, and flamethrower experiments were separate configurations rather than standard T-27 equipment. Sources

The working armor range is approximately 6–10 mm. It is best understood as light protection, not a guarantee against every rifle or machine-gun round under every condition. The vehicle lacked the space and crew specialization of a larger tank. Routine communications also relied heavily on methods other than a universally fitted radio; the published radio variant is a separate and less firmly established subject. Sources

Power, running gear and practical mobility

The standard reference power plant is a Ford-derived petrol engine of about 40 hp, connected to an automotive transmission and compact tracked running gear. The retained specification gives approximately 2.7 tonnes and dimensions around 2.60 m long, 1.83 m wide and 1.44 m high. These values describe the tankette baseline, not every experimental weapon carrier built from its components. Sources

A commonly quoted road speed near 42 km/h cannot be substituted for sustained cross-country performance. Accounts emphasize limited ground clearance, narrow tracks, visibility problems and the difficulty of operating the small machine over unfavorable terrain. A nominal range near 120 km likewise depends on conditions and is not established as an unconditional field endurance. Sources

Contemporary criticism is a central part of the evidence. The published translated May 1932 assessment questioned the tankette's usefulness in its intended reconnaissance role and called for better mobility, observation and an amphibious successor. Such a report is valuable because it records what evaluators wanted changed. It is not proof that the changes were all implemented on existing T-27s. Sources

Production and the experimental family

The production total is not settled in the available accounts. Approximately 2,540 and about 3,300 appear in different sources, while other project records use a rounded total above three thousand. The account also discusses a 1937 inventory of 2,547. An inventory snapshot cannot by itself establish the original manufacturing total, particularly where losses, transfers, conversions and classification conventions may differ. Sources

Published figures contains radio proposals, gun installations, recoilless and rocket work, flame equipment, underwater trials, towing adaptations and aerial-transport experiments. The reported KT-27 cannon vehicle and the various smaller-caliber proposals cannot be rolled together as one standardized production version. The cited quantity for later flamethrower work also remains subject to confirmation. Sources

Organization figures need the same discipline. A nominal number of battalions multiplied by an authorized establishment describes a paper force, not a factory acceptance return. The large quoted totals refer to different manufacturing and accounting categories. Sources

Service, transport and obsolescence

The Soviet Union is the principal documented operator. Accounts place the tankette in training, reconnaissance and other support activities, with subsequent use in instructional organizations and towing roles. The cited accounts do not firmly establish foreign or captured examples. Sources

Air transport is a particularly useful illustration of how experimental employment can be mistaken for a standard capability. The photograph shows a tankette associated with a TB-3 bomber and supports investigation of carriage trials. It does not, on its own, establish parachute delivery, operational combat drops, or a universal airborne modification to the fleet. Sources

By the time larger and more capable reconnaissance vehicles were available, the tankette's limitations had become increasingly apparent. Some surviving T-27s continued in secondary roles. Accounts record a late combat-use claim near Yakhroma in 1941 through secondary evidence, but does not support a comprehensive battle-loss history or broad conclusions about the effectiveness of every surviving vehicle. Preservation and historical evidence

The two modern museum views show the hull, fixed weapon opening, and running gear. Paint and fittings reflect preservation and restoration as well as original construction. The small aerial-transport photograph documents a different context rather than an ordinary operational configuration. Sources

The key unresolved questions concern production totals, manufacturing responsibility, the status of specialized experiments and the details of late service. Resolving them would turn a familiar short tankette summary into a stronger reference article. Sources
