T-15 light tank

The T-15 was a small reconnaissance tank supplied to Belgium through Vickers and adapted to Belgian requirements.

Identity and reconnaissance purpose

The T-15 was a small reconnaissance tank supplied to Belgium through Vickers and adapted to Belgian requirements. It combined British automotive and running-gear development with Belgian-selected armament and turret work. Some references call it a light tank and others a tankette; this difference cannot obscure the specific vehicle under discussion. Sources

The T-15 can be distinguished from Belgium's T-13 tank destroyers. The similar national designation and shared Vickers background do not make them variants of one machine. The T-15 carried a heavy machine gun rather than the T-13's principal anti-tank cannon. Acquisition and delivery

Accounts describe an initial order for 18 vehicles in March 1934, delivered in February 1935, followed by an order for 24 in April 1935 and deliveries in November–December of that year. Together these batches account for the familiar 42-vehicle fleet. Other summary records extend the end of the program to 1936 or describe a broader 1936–1938 period. The British-built chassis drew on Vickers’ commercial light-tank line associated with the British Mk III. Belgian work included the conical turret and 13.2 mm Hotchkiss armament. Procurement, shipment, equipment installation, and unit acceptance took place separately; 1935 does not establish when all 42 vehicles became operational. Sources

Hull, crew, and protection

The compact arrangement placed the driver in the hull and the commander in the turret. This gave the two-man vehicle a low personnel requirement, but left observation, command, and gun handling concentrated in one turret occupant. Protection was light, commonly described in the 7–9 mm range. Its value lay in resisting limited small-arms and fragment threats, not in meeting the protection standard of a heavier battle tank. The cited accounts do not firmly establish armor at different locations and production details. Armament and mechanical performance

The 13.2 mm Hotchkiss in the Belgian turret was the defining weapon. It does not establish a conventional tank cannon simply because it could threaten some lightly protected targets. Some accounts describe a supplementary 7.65 mm weapon or an external mounting, but such fittings does not establish additional production variants without evidence of their extent and dates. Sources

The Meadows engine is generally credited with around 88–90 hp. Road speed is often given near 64 km/h and range around 230 km, reflecting the design's emphasis on mobility. The usual weight is approximately 3.8–4 tonnes, while an outlying 6-tonne statement is preserved as a discrepancy. Power-to-weight ratios depend on that unresolved input. Configurations and unrealized changes

The production batches represent acquisition groups, not necessarily two officially separate tank marks. Details of optional equipment, testing, and proposed improvements remain incompletely documented. The same distinction applies to the German captured-equipment designation VCL 701(b): a recognition entry demonstrates identification practice, not the number of operational captured tanks or their subsequent front-line employment. The 1940 campaign and its limitations

Belgian T-15s served in the short 1940 campaign within a dispersed force structure. Their mobility could be useful for reconnaissance, liaison, and local support, while the heavy machine gun and thin armor restricted the tasks they could safely attempt.
