Overview and variants
The Sturmpanzerwagen A7V was Germany’s domestically developed tank to enter combat during the First World War. Accounts place the start of the project in the response to Allied tank warfare in 1916, but its operational story belongs chiefly to 1918. A large, enclosed fighting compartment, a forward-mounted gun, and machine guns around the hull gave it a markedly different appearance from the British rhomboid tanks. Its short production run and limited battlefield employment make the relationship between individual vehicles, technical configurations, and family totals particularly important. Sources
The available evidence uses twenty completed combat tanks as its principal production count while retaining a conflicting manufacturer-history total of twenty-three. Those numbers cannot be reconciled by assumption. An order for chassis, a completed armored fighting vehicle, an experimental machine, and an unarmored carrier are different accounting categories. Names including Mephisto, Nixe, Elfriede, Baden, Cyklop, and Gretchen identify particular vehicles. They are useful anchors for combat, modification, capture, and preservation histories, but a name alone does not establish a distinct manufactured variant. Development and industrial organization
The program attempted to turn an available tracked-vehicle basis into a military system that could serve more than one purpose. Accounts describe a common chassis concept linking the armored assault vehicle with transport applications. This is the background to the Überlandwagen cargo carrier; the carrier’s presence in the available evidence is evidence of a related support program, not evidence that it carried the standard tank’s protection and armament. The development narrative identifies Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and other participating firms, including Loeb, Büssing, and Lanz, rather than attributing the whole industrial effort to a single finished-tank factory. It places prototype activity in 1917 and frontline employment in March 1918. The cited accounts do not firmly establish exact contract, delivery, and acceptance sequences. The proposed A7V-U sought a different solution to obstacle crossing through a more British-like rhomboid arrangement. It was an experiment rather than a production upgrade with established combat use. Projected orders and reported prototype details remain distinct from completed service vehicles. Layout, protection, and the working environment
The A7V’s weapons occupied a fixed armored superstructure, not a rotating turret. The front gun and distributed machine-gun positions surrounded a large shared compartment, while a raised position accommodated driving and command functions. The external silhouette can suggest generous space, but Published accounts describe how engines, transmission components, weapons, ammunition, and a large crew competed within it. Sources
Crew size is commonly summarized as about eighteen, with larger complements reported in the source material. Those figures need to retain their circumstances rather than being reduced to a universal number inferred from a group photograph. Heat, fumes, noise, restricted visibility, and the demands of operating several weapons formed part of the working environment. Its armor information likewise preserves the source’s ranges and locations. A maximum thickness is not the thickness of every hull surface, and a museum measurement of one surviving vehicle cannot silently overwrite every other configuration. Sources
Armament, propulsion, and mobility
The standard combat arrangement in the cited sources combines a forward 5.7 cm gun with six MG 08 machine guns. This is the main configuration around which the family overview is organized. Vehicle 501’s reported initial machine-gun-only arrangement, followed by a gun installation, belongs in its modification history. Counting both fits as newly manufactured tanks would inflate the production total. Sources
The available evidence describes two Daimler petrol engines, commonly rated at roughly 100 horsepower each, driving a vehicle of around thirty tonnes or more depending on the source and configuration. The cited accounts do not firmly establish Engine identification and quoted outputs. Sources
The low tracked chassis beneath a substantial overhanging hull imposed different limitations from those of the British all-round track layout. Published accounts describe the A7V’s battlefield difficulties to obstacle crossing, traction, mechanical reliability, and the demands of recovering an immobilized heavy vehicle. Firm-ground maximum speeds cannot be represented as sustained rates of advance through a cratered battlefield. Sources

Production, service, and combat
The production account describes a very small operational fleet supported by an industrial effort that never approached Allied tank output. The available evidence distinguishes a larger initial chassis ambition from completed combat tanks and retains the unresolved twenty-versus-twenty-three discrepancy. It does not establish a complete monthly acceptance ledger or a reliable comprehensive cost series. Sources
Operational use belongs principally to the Imperial German Army. Captured examples in Allied custody, postwar exhibitions, and museum preservation are separate relationships. A vehicle moved to an Allied collection has not thereby become a production export variant or evidence of an operational foreign tank unit. Sources
Accounts place the A7V’s combat debut at St Quentin on 21 March 1918. It describes a small force whose effect was constrained by availability and breakdowns. The account represents an episode in a limited operational program, not as evidence that every completed tank was simultaneously serviceable or committed. The encounter near Villers-Bretonneux on 24 April 1918 links the A7V story directly with the British Mark IV. Accounts associate Nixe with the first tank-against-tank engagement and retains caution about the identification of a later damaged-vehicle photograph. Mephisto and Elfriede supply other individual histories of immobilization, recovery, and capture. Their differing fates cannot be combined into one generic description of an A7V being destroyed. Exact recovery dates, vehicle movements, and crew accounts remain areas for targeted checking. A photograph taken after recovery records the vehicle at that later moment; it does not automatically date the original action. Legacy and the surviving visual record
The A7V’s historical importance rests on the small German wartime program itself, its contrasting technical solution, and the evidence preserved through particular vehicles and photographs. The account does not justify a simple, uninterrupted design lineage from the A7V to the German tanks of the Second World War.
