Strv m/42

The Strv m/42 was Sweden’s principal domestically produced medium tank of the Second World War and the country’s first tank to carry a 7.5 cm gun in regular service.

Sweden’s wartime medium tank under national constraints

The Strv m/42 was Sweden’s principal domestically produced medium tank of the Second World War and the country’s first tank to carry a 7.5 cm gun in regular service. It emerged from the Landsverk Lago design lineage and from a 1941 requirement shaped by Swedish geography, bridges, railways, industry, and neutrality. The army wanted a vehicle substantially stronger than its light tanks but could not accept the mass of the heaviest foreign designs. The resulting tank occupied a national category that was “heavy” relative to Sweden’s earlier fleet while remaining medium by international standards. Sources

The family is not established as one mechanically uniform vehicle. Twin Scania-Vabis engines, a single Volvo engine, electromagnetic, hydraulic, and later mechanical transmissions created distinct configurations. The designations TM, TH, EH, and TV encode those differences. The split-turret DT project was an experimental attempt to increase firepower. Strv 74 and Ikv 73 later reused the chassis in separate postwar forms. Sources

The strongest production total is 282 delivered. Sweden was the only operator, and the cited sources does not establish combat use. Its significance instead lies in neutral-state mobilization: a country outside the war still had to prepare for invasion, expand armored formations, allocate scarce industrial capacity, and sustain a vehicle built from a mix of domestic development and constrained component choices. Lago lineage, procurement compromise, and production splitting

Sweden did not have time to design an entirely new medium tank after the regional situation deteriorated. Landsverk therefore enlarged and revised the Lago concept. The hull was lengthened, protection increased within a roughly twenty-two-ton ceiling, and a new turret was developed around a short 7.5 cm gun. The armament balanced high-explosive and anti-armor roles but lacked the velocity of later dedicated anti-tank weapons. That compromise reflected the weight limit, ammunition commonality, and the expectation that a separate tank destroyer could handle the hardest targets. Sources

Manufacturing was divided between Landsverk and Volvo. The split reduced concentration risk and expanded capacity, but it also multiplied technical arrangements. Volvo’s insistence on its own engine led to the single-engine EH configuration, while transmission availability and reliability drove TM and TH production. The German ZF electromagnetic gearbox promised compactness and efficiency but proved troublesome in service. Hydraulic and later mechanical alternatives became part of the family’s postwar evolution. This history explains why subtype totals and conversion figures remain uncertain. Orders, deliveries, drivetrains, and later rebuilds are different categories. A count of original TM vehicles do not automatically equal the number that retained that transmission, and a later conversion into TV, Strv 74, or Ikv 73 does not represent a new wartime tank. A capable national design with a weak long-term gun

The Strv m/42 used a conventional five-man layout with the driver and radio operator in the hull and commander, gunner, and loader in the turret. Welded construction, torsion-bar suspension, and a fully rotating turret reflected modern Swedish design practice. Frontal armor and mobility were adequate for the national requirement, and the tank gave Swedish armored troops a platform for training and organization at a scale not possible with the earlier light fleet. Its principal tactical limitation was the short 7.5 cm gun. The weapon could deliver useful high explosive and engage lighter armor, but by the middle of the war it was not an ideal answer to the newest medium and heavy tanks. An experimental longer-gun/split-turret path did not enter production. This weakness later helped drive the Strv 74 conversion, which placed a more powerful weapon and new turret on rebuilt m/42 chassis. Sources

Road reliability depended on the transmission and steering installation. Accounts distinguish the electromagnetic transmission from later arrangements and mention Volvo steering equipment. Published range, ammunition, gun-designation, and subvariant details are not entirely consistent. Sources

Neutral service, postwar reuse, and an unusually long chassis life

Sweden alone operated the Strv m/42. The tanks equipped wartime and postwar armored formations, supported training, and helped establish the routines of a modern national armored force, but they did not enter combat. Their service history concerns mobilization, exercises, readiness, maintenance, and unit holdings rather than combat. Sources

The chassis outlived the original turreted medium-tank role. Electromagnetic-transmission vehicles were rebuilt with other gearboxes, and later programs used m/42 chassis for the Strv 74 and Ikv 73. These descendants demonstrate the value of the basic hull investment while also showing that the original gun and turret no longer met postwar needs. The Pvkv m/43 and the DT experiment belong in the broader Swedish search for more anti-armor performance but remain separate vehicle paths. Sources

The family’s historical importance is consequently larger than its lack of combat might suggest. It connected interwar Landsverk engineering to Sweden’s postwar armored development, trained crews and maintainers, and forced industry to solve engine, transmission, and dispersed-production problems. Its correct assessment is not that it was a secret decisive tank. It was a nationally optimized design whose limitations were understood and whose chassis was valuable enough to remain in service through substantial reconstruction. Sources

Counts, variants, and photographs still need primary control

Unresolved totals concern Landsverk and Volvo contracts, TM/TH/EH allocations, conversions from electromagnetic to hydraulic or mechanical transmissions, and subsequent Strv 74 and Ikv 73 rebuilds. Current figures such as 225 versus 226 Strv 74 conversions remain open until acceptance and workshop records establish the categories being counted. Sources

Technical terminology also needs resolution. Sources differ over gun-length notation, engine and gearbox subtype distribution, ammunition capacity, range, and some fittings. Exact radios, sights, machine-gun arrangements, and the distribution of engine-deck grilles and turret-top fittings remain incompletely documented. The DT/split-turret project needs trial drawings and reports before its gun, autoloader, and chronology can be finalized. Sources
