Overview
The Schneider CA1 was an early French assault tank intended to carry protected firepower through wire and across defended ground in support of infantry. Its characteristic arrangement combined a short tracked chassis, a box-like fighting compartment, a short 75 mm gun mounted toward the right front, and two 8 mm Hotchkiss machine guns. Accounts record a production program of about 400 vehicles and identifies the attack at Berry-au-Bac on 16 April 1917 as its combat debut. Sources
The CA1 was an operational weapon rather than an unbuilt precursor, but its first fighting exposed serious limitations. The hull projected beyond the track contact area, the forward gun had restricted arcs, and the crew worked in a crowded space with machinery, fuel, and ammunition. Its history is therefore more than a catalogue of an unsuccessful first attack: subsequent modifications, continued French use, and service in Spain belong to the same family story. Sources
Origins and development
The development narrative links Schneider's work with Holt-derived tracked machinery and the efforts of Eugène Brillié during 1915–1916. A tractor-based approach offered a starting point for moving an armored hull over difficult ground, but adapting available machinery did not automatically produce a vehicle suited to trenches. The resulting design placed an enclosed fighting body over a relatively short running gear and gave it a projecting nose intended to help with obstacles. Sources
The CA1's weapon arrangement reflected the need for direct support rather than a later turreted-tank pattern. A short 75 mm weapon could attack local targets, while the machine guns covered other approaches. Because the main gun did not sit in a freely rotating turret, positioning the entire vehicle was important to bringing it to bear. Hull, armament, and crew
The fighting body was a riveted, enclosed casemate rather than a turreted layout. Its length in relation to the running gear was central to the mobility problem: a hull could reach an obstacle before its tracks could obtain useful purchase, or become supported where the tracks could no longer propel it. Crew and protection figures differ between the cited French and Spanish descriptions. The French baseline is presented with six crew, whereas the Spanish Army exhibit description gives seven. Armor values include 11.4 mm in one museum description and maximum values near 19–19.5 mm in others. The account interprets this as potentially reflecting base armor, later protection, or a particular exhibit state. Power and mobility
The CA1 used a petrol engine and tracked running gear derived from the early tractor approach. The source descriptions do not give a single identical power figure: the French museum lists 60 CV, while the Spanish exhibit description lists 55 CV. Those values are retained with their source context instead of being silently converted into evidence of a documented engine variant. Sources
Published speed figures also differ. The account carries a British museum figure of 3.75 mph and a French figure of 8 km/h, alongside a limited trench-crossing capability. These describe the general low-speed vehicle more securely than they establish an exact performance envelope for every configuration. The enclosed arrangement imposed additional burdens through heat, fumes, cramped movement, and restricted observation. A command or wireless configuration appears in the available accounts, but evidence is weaker than for the ordinary gun tank. Production and configurations
The standard vehicle, added-armor configurations, and later improvements can overlap in the histories of individual hulls. A production change and a retrofit may produce similar external appearances while having different dates and accounting consequences. Sources

French production, acceptance, delivery to units, and operational availability remain distinct. A factory total does not show how many tanks could fight on a selected day. The related CA2, CA3, and CA4 projects are development subjects requiring classification notes; their labels are not grounds for expanding the CA1 production total. Sources
Combat service and Spain
The first major commitment at Berry-au-Bac in April 1917 is the central operational episode in the cited sources. Heavy losses and immobilization exposed the interaction of design weaknesses, ground, enemy fire, and the circumstances of employment. Later use included renewed operations around Laffaux and continued employment as French armored forces developed. These actions cannot be reduced to a claim that the CA1 either failed everywhere or became fully satisfactory after modifications. Its usefulness depended on circumstances and support. A combined loss figure for Schneider and Saint-Chamond tanks cannot be recast as a loss total for the CA1 alone. Sources
Spanish service is a documented extension of the vehicle's history. Accounts record six purchased in 1921, employment in Morocco, and surviving vehicles in the period of the Spanish Civil War. These records belong to the operator history of existing CA1s. They were not six newly designed Spanish variants. Legacy, preservation, and identification
The CA1 demonstrates the practical distance between combining armor, weapons, and tracks and producing a dependable battlefield system. The references identify the surviving Saumur vehicle and describes its movement to the United States, return to France in 1987, and later restoration. The designation itself also merits care. Alternative names and interpretations of the letters in CA1 can be stored for discovery, but an uncertain expansion does not establish an unquestioned definition.
