Renault D1 / D2

The Renault D1 and D2 form a useful combined research assignment, but they need distinguishable identities in the encyclopedia.

The Renault D1 and D2 form a useful combined research assignment, but they need distinguishable identities in the encyclopedia. Both sought to move beyond the capabilities of the Renault FT, with greater protection, more substantial armament, and communications equipment. Their development, production batches, turret arrangements, and service histories were not identical. Sources

D1 and D2 had related development histories but separate specifications and operational records. D3 was another neighboring development, not a further D1 or D2 production variant. Sources

The D1 and its turret delays

The D1 development is placed in 1928, with adoption in 1929. The account connects it to the NC development path but emphasizes a wider hull and a three-man crew, including a radio operator. The production account gives 160 vehicles including ten pre-series examples. That inclusive wording matters: adding the pre-series batch again would inflate the total. Sources

Turret supply complicated the transition from a new hull to a fully equipped fighting tank. Interim use of FT-type turrets and the later ST2 installation belong to different configuration states. Hull production, turret availability, delivery, and combat readiness were different stages of the program. A photograph of an early hull or a later ST2-equipped vehicle cannot alone establish what every tank carried at acceptance. Sources

Weapon nomenclature also remains uncertain. The accounts record an early naval-derived 47 mm reference associated with the ST2 program and a later SA 34 production account. Sources

D2 development, production, and rearmament

The D2 was the heavier development, with prototype work in the early 1930s and an adoption date given as 1933. Its production account separates two batches of fifty vehicles from three prototypes. The first series used the SA 34 gun; the later series carried the longer SA 35. A subsequent rearmament program for earlier vehicles do not create an additional production batch. Sources

The first D2s replaced D1s in the 1st Battalion of the 507e RCC at Metz in early 1937, while D1s were transferred to North Africa. Individual D2s received names associated with French victories. Those names are useful for photograph and service records but do not turn each tank into a separate variant. Sources

The second order, placed in April 1938 in the published account, produced late deliveries in spring 1940. New vehicles and rearmed older tanks reached units under very different readiness conditions. Experimental flamethrower work on vehicles associated with numbers 2002 and 2003 belongs to another, limited development track. Hull, crew, and the fighting compartment

Both programs used three crew: a driver, a radio operator, and a commander whose turret duties also included operating the gun. The dedicated radio position improved the division of communications work, but it did not create a multi-man turret. Observation, tactical command, aiming, and loading remained concentrated in the commander's position. Sources

The D1's distinctive features included its rear tail and external antenna arrangement. The D2 dispensed with the tail and differed in hull height, engine-deck treatment, and external stowage. Model identification depends on the combination of features and the photograph's date rather than one isolated detail. Sources

Armor and armament likewise need separate entries. The account commonly describes the D1's principal exposed protection around 30 mm, with some localized or source-specific higher figures, and the D2 around 40 mm. Ammunition totals vary with the gun and stowage arrangement. Mobility, communications, and maintenance

The D1 is associated with a four-cylinder engine around 74 horsepower, while the D2 used a six-cylinder installation around 150 horsepower. Published accounts describe different nominal road speeds for the two vehicles, approximately 18.6 and 23 km/h. Such figures describe a published configuration and condition, not the average pace of a unit in a campaign. Sources

The running gear, return arrangements, and hull construction changed between the designs. Suspension and transmission wear, maintenance access, and the supply of spare parts were central practical concerns. The cited accounts do not firmly establish radio designations. Sources

Accounts describe serious mechanical readiness and support difficulties, including allegations concerning the 19e BCC. The cited evidence does not establish sabotage as a general explanation for the vehicles’ failures or losses. Sources

Manufacture and unit availability

D1 pre-series vehicles were part of its development total. D2 prototypes, first and second series, and later rearmament represent distinct manufacturing or conversion categories. A tank awaiting its turret, undergoing repair, or newly issued to an unfamiliar crew was not necessarily ready for immediate combat. The two series' chronological overlap in 1940 makes that distinction particularly important. Sources

The account cites a French military archival notice and spare-parts documentation as potentially valuable technical evidence. A catalog reference is not the same as inspection of the underlying manual, however. The article's current figures remain grounded in the cited sources until those documents can be read. Service in France and North Africa

D1 service moved from metropolitan training into North African formations. The references identify the 61e, 65e, and 67e BCC and describes the 67e's return to France in June 1940. Its action around Suippes is distinct from the service of the tanks remaining in Africa. Exact loss totals require definitions separating destruction, mechanical loss, abandonment, and later recovery. Sources

The later North African account includes fighting associated with the Allied landings in 1942 and the Tunisian campaign. Those episodes remain unconfirmed. A long nominal service span cannot by itself establish continuous operational availability. Sources

D2s are associated with the 19e BCC and later independent companies, including the fighting around Montcornet and the Amiens–Dury area in May 1940. The accounts distinguish experienced but worn earlier vehicles from late-arriving tanks whose crews and support arrangements were not always ready. The D1 and D2 demonstrate the difficulty of improving protection, firepower, communications, and mobility within a small crew and a constrained support system. Their shortcomings cannot be explained by gun caliber alone, and the presence of radio equipment did not remove every command and coordination problem.
