A Czech design adapted for Switzerland
The Panzerwagen 39 was a small Swiss armored force’s answer to an urgent procurement problem. Developed by ČKD-Praga under the export designation LTH, it belonged to a wider Czech light-tank design tradition but was adapted to Swiss requirements, weapons and industrial participation. Calling it simply a Swiss Panzer 38(t) obscures those decisions. Common ancestry does not make the two vehicles identical, nor does it justify merging their production records. Sources
Accounts record a series of twenty-four vehicles and discusses a prototype separately. That modest scale is important to the story: Switzerland was acquiring an operational capability and experience in armored organization, not establishing a large independent tank industry. Swiss armament and equipment choices gave the LTH a distinct identity, while a division between complete imports and domestic assembly created a limited local manufacturing role. The protected family therefore includes its own procurement and service history. Other export relatives belong in comparisons, not in an expanded Swiss total. Requirements, contracts and trials
The development sequence in the cited sources begins with Swiss requirements in October 1937 and negotiations that culminated in contracts that December. The initial specification envisaged a light tank with a 20 mm weapon and a Swiss diesel engine. Detailed requirements did not remain frozen: trials, the choice of power plant and a shift toward the Swiss 24 mm gun shaped the final vehicle. The resulting tank is described as the product of that process, rather than as an exact realization of the earliest proposal. Sources
The trial prototype ran with different engines, and the cited accounts substantial testing in both Czechoslovakia and Switzerland. Those test distances are individual source claims, not an accumulated operational endurance record for the production fleet. Deliveries and entry into Swiss service followed in 1939, with wartime organization developing around a very small pool of vehicles. The subsequent 47 mm experiment belongs to an effort to improve firepower after the original tank’s limitations became apparent. Crew, protection and Swiss armament
A three-man crew operated a compact vehicle with the driving position forward, a central fighting compartment and the engine at the rear. Riveted and bolted construction and a front-drive arrangement reflected its Czech engineering background, but the Swiss turret and weapons installation were defining features. The commander’s work combined observation, command and turret duties within a small fighting space. Nominal crew size alone therefore says little about how efficiently the crew could find targets, communicate and employ its weapons together. Sources
The principal armament was the Swiss 24 mm cannon, accompanied by machine guns. The accounts distinguish that installation from the earlier 20 mm requirement and from the later 47 mm trial. Its armor figures also need their locations attached: hull front, turret front, sides and roof were not equally protected. A single maximum thickness would exaggerate protection elsewhere. Ammunition quantities, auxiliary weapon arrangements and sight details remain configuration-specific reported figures. They are retained in the published figures without converting uncertain equipment notes into a universal production specification. Sources
Engines, mobility and support
The LTH story includes both Scania and Saurer engine installations. Published accounts describe different power figures and a prototype sequence in which engines were exchanged. A useful overview keeps those distinctions visible instead of choosing the largest horsepower number and assigning it to every tank. Road speed and range similarly describe particular published conditions; they are not guarantees of cross-country performance on Swiss terrain. The vehicle’s mechanical ancestry helped provide a workable light tank, but a mixed small fleet still required appropriate spares, maintenance knowledge and training. Sources
Industrial participation was divided between ČKD-built vehicles and Swiss assembly, with twelve vehicles associated with each portion of the production arrangement. That division does not mean that Switzerland built twenty-four additional tanks after importing another twenty-four. Contract amounts excluding separately supplied weapons or optical equipment do not represent complete ready-for-service prices. A service history without a combat record
The Panzerwagen 39 served Switzerland during the Second World War, but The available evidence does not establish a combat career. Its operational history concerns mobilization, unit organization, exercises and the practical introduction of armored vehicles into a small force. An early organization of four-tank platoons and later company arrangements describes how a fleet of only twenty-four could be distributed. These changes are service groupings, not new tank variants or increases in production. Sources
The end of its career requires more than one date. Removal from tank-company service in 1948 and final retirement in 1960 describe different institutional stages in the source. Collapsing them into a single unexplained service endpoint would make one legitimate date appear to contradict the other. The same care applies to hypothetical wartime effectiveness: the 24 mm gun and protection can be discussed as technical limitations, but they cannot establish how Swiss crews actually performed against enemy tanks when no such fighting is documented here. Training value and organizational experience are real historical outcomes without an invented battle narrative. Sources
Development branches and historical significance
The family’s later experiments show both the usefulness and the limits of a small light-tank chassis. An attempt to install a more powerful 47 mm weapon and the lengthened Nahkampfkanone I project belong to the development history, not to the production specification of the original fleet. The Swiss tank is significant as an example of selective adaptation: a country could obtain an established foreign design while specifying its own weapons and accepting a limited assembly role. That approach brought capabilities but also imposed the compromises of a small production run and evolving equipment. Surviving photographs and museum records help explain the vehicle, yet a modern display does not automatically preserve every original fitting or color.
