Historical overview
The Panzer 87 Leopard 2 was Switzerland's late-Cold-War solution to a modernization problem that domestic tank design could no longer solve economically. After the Federal Council stopped the indigenous new-tank path in December 1979, Switzerland compared the German Leopard 2 and the American M1 Abrams in 1980-1981 and ultimately selected the Leopard 2. Classification is straightforward at the vehicle level: Panzer 87 is a main battle tank. The boundary issue is database classification. In a global tank taxonomy, it is a national Leopard 2A4 variant; in a Swiss procurement and industrial-history taxonomy, it is a distinct family entry because it replaced indigenous Swiss MBTs, had a separate Swiss designation, had licensed local production, carried Swiss equipment, and led to Swiss-specific modernization and conversions. Design and performance
The Panzer 87 retained the Leopard 2A4's conventional Western MBT layout: driver in the front hull, commander, gunner, and loader in the turret, main armament in a fully rotating turret, and the powerpack at the rear. The four-person crew preserved a human loader rather than adopting an autoloader, reflecting the parent Leopard 2 design philosophy and Swiss adoption of that system. [S2; S10] Sources
The hull followed the Leopard 2A4 welded-hull arrangement with heavy frontal protection, side protection and skirts, rear engine compartment, and a low driver position in the forward hull. Exact armor composition and equivalent protection figures are not public and cannot be guessed. The turret was the angular Leopard 2A4-type turret with a 120 mm smoothbore gun, commander and gunner sighting systems, and manually loaded ammunition. In the WE program, one of the most important changes was replacement of hydraulic turret and weapon drives by electric drives, improving maintainability and reducing the hazard associated with hydraulic fluid in the crew compartment. The WE program also improved the commander's observation capability by adding a thermal-imaging element to the commander's periscope and adding fire-control improvements such as laser-echo selection. The main armament was the Rheinmetall 120 mm L/44 smoothbore gun, the defining gun of the Leopard 2A4 generation. ASMZ lists the Pz 87 WE ammunition load as 42 rounds of 120 mm ammunition, using arrow/projectile and shaped-charge types in Swiss terminology. Swiss official 2025 planning calls for fire-control computers and weapon systems to be modified so that Pz 87 WE can fire new multipurpose ammunition. The program includes prototype work and troop trials before planned implementation by about 2030, so this is described as a planned or funded modernization path, not as a fully completed capability for every active vehicle at the account date. ASMZ lists the engine displacement at 47.6 liters, fuel capacity at 1,160 liters, maximum speed at 68 km/h, road range at 340 km, and cross-country range at 220 km for the WE-era data set. The running gear uses torsion-bar suspension and tracks typical of the Leopard 2 family.
