Object 770

Object 770 was not a production tank family in the normal sense; it was a prototype heavy tank and one of the last serious Soviet attempts to build a purpose-designed, heavily protected, gun-armed breakthrough vehicle after the T-10.

Historical overview

Object 770 was not a production tank family in the normal sense; it was a prototype heavy tank and one of the last serious Soviet attempts to build a purpose-designed, heavily protected, gun-armed breakthrough vehicle after the T-10. The vehicle is described as USSR-OBJ770, a Soviet prototype heavy tank developed in 1956-1959, prototype-only, and cancelled with the heavy-tank category. Sources

Its historical significance lies less in combat service - there was none - than in the technical package it attempted to combine. Baryatinsky, Kolomiyets, and Koshchavtsev describe the vehicle as a new-assembly Chelyabinsk design under P. P. Object 770 mattered because it sat at the boundary between the Soviet heavy tank and the emerging main battle tank. Its high power-to-weight ratio, modernized fire control, loading aid, WMD protection package, and advanced driveline were forward-looking. The most important "variants" in the cited account are therefore not production subtypes but program relationships: Object 770 itself, the competing Object 277 and Object 279, the diesel/turbine Object 277/278 branch, and the in-service T-10M baseline that framed the replacement problem. A few later online summaries mention a T-770 testbed or multiple prototypes, but the cited accounts and the principal Russian armor-history source used here treat Object 770 as a one-prototype cancelled project. Object 770 appears to have been a technically impressive and comparatively practical late Soviet heavy tank, but it arrived at the moment when heavy tanks were being politically, doctrinally, and technologically displaced. Sources

In the mid-1950s the Soviet Army still maintained a heavy-tank design track. The T-10 family gave the Soviet Union a fielded heavy tank, but nuclear-war planning, Western heavy tanks, and the desire for greater long-range firepower encouraged a new generation of heavy vehicles. Pospielov describes the new Soviet heavy-tank requirements as capped at roughly 60 tonnes and armed with a 130 mm gun, with requirements shaped by the nuclear-war assumptions that followed the Totsk nuclear exercise. The problem was no longer simply how to build a more powerful IS-series successor. A late-1950s heavy tank had to carry a large-caliber gun, resist contemporary anti-tank weapons, survive in a contaminated battlefield, remain mobile enough for operational maneuver, and provide better observation, rangefinding, night fighting, and communications. The industrial context also mattered. Leningrad and Chelyabinsk design communities were both involved in postwar heavy-tank work. The late program therefore became a competition: Leningrad projects such as Object 277, Object 278, and Object 279 on one side, and Chelyabinsk's Object 770 under P. P. Isakov on the other. Object 770 was a Soviet experimental heavy tank tested in competition with other late-1950s designs. It remainsed a prototype and later survived as a museum vehicle. Sources

Published accounts describe Object 770 a development/start span of 1956-1959 and a prototype date range of 1958-1959. Pospielov states that in 1956 the GBTU issued tactical-technical requirements and that four projects were prepared in 1956-1957: Object 770 under P. P. Isakov at Chelyabinsk, and Objects 277, 278, and 279 in Leningrad. [S1, S3] Sources

Baryatinsky, Kolomiyets, and Koshchavtsev stress that Object 770 differed from Object 277 by being built around new assemblies rather than primarily developing from the existing T-10 line. That distinction is central: Object 770 was not merely an up-gunned T-10 but an attempt to integrate a new engine-transmission package, suspension, hull/turret structure, and fire-control/loader package. The test chronology is not perfectly consistent across secondary literature. Pospielov says the prototypes appeared on factory proving grounds in 1957 and passed proving-ground tests, with Object 770 and Object 279 emerging as favorites for different reasons: Object 770 for overall combat characteristics and fit to the customer requirement, Object 279 for the novelty and theoretical promise of its design. The program ended for reasons larger than Object 770 alone. Baryatinsky places a decisive moment at the 22 July 1960 Kapustin Yar demonstration, where N. S. Khrushchev decided to stop serial T-10 production and to prohibit further heavy-tank design. Design and performance

Object 770 used a conventional tank arrangement: driver in the front hull, fighting compartment and turret in the center, and powerpack at the rear. The novelty lay less in crew placement than in the integration of cast armor, a large-caliber gun, advanced driveline, and hydropneumatic suspension. Sources

The cast hull used carefully varied angles and thicknesses. Baryatinsky gives side angles of roughly 64–70 degrees, side armor of 65–84 mm, and frontal hull armor up to 120 mm. These nominal measurements do not alone establish equivalent protection, which also depends on the precise geometry and the weapon striking it. Sources

The turret was a cast structure with heavy frontal protection. Baryatinsky gives a turret-front figure of 290 mm and a turret armor range of roughly 290-80 mm in the tabular data. The armor scheme was cast, sloped, and differentiated rather than uniform. The hull and turret figures are described as nominal physical thicknesses in selected zones, not as complete ballistic-protection maps. Detailed armor arrays, cast-quality variations, and joint design remain unresolved questions. Sources

The main weapon was the 130 mm M-65 rifled gun, the same general late-heavy-tank gun family associated with Object 277/278/279/770 sources. Baryatinsky states 26 rounds for the main gun. Some later online summaries report a higher 37-round figure. Until a primary stowage diagram or trial report is consulted, the 26-round figure is the working value and the 37-round figure is treated as a source conflict. [S2, S7] Sources

The tank is described with a Groza two-plane stabilizer, automatic guidance elements, and a TPD-2S rangefinder sight. These features show Object 770 as a fire-control modernization project, not just a heavier gun platform. Sources

The cited equipment list includes an R-113 radio and R-120 intercom. These are consistent with late-1950s Soviet armored-vehicle communications practice. The cited accounts do not firmly establish exact installation details. Sources

The vehicle is described with WMD/NBC protection, automatic fire suppression, thermal smoke equipment, night devices, and a gyro-halfcompass. These features directly reflect the nuclear-war and all-weather expectations placed on the late heavy-tank competition. [S2, S3] Sources

Production, operators, and combat record

Object 770 remained a prototype project. The vehicle is described as "Prototype only" and gives "1 prototype" as the number built. The same the cited accounts separately records the account as "Cancelled / 1 / verify," which is important: it affirms the one-prototype working value but leaves a verification warning. Sources

The principal industrial actor was Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant, with P. P. Isakov named as the leading designer in the sources used here. The Chelyabinsk approach was structurally more novel than a simple T-10 derivative because it relied on new assemblies, including the powertrain and suspension package. [S2, S3] Sources

No monthly or yearly production series exists. There was no export production, licensed production, command version, recovery version, bridge-layer, engineering derivative, flamethrower, assault-gun conversion, or tank-destroyer conversion documented from Object 770. Object 770 had no operational service. The correct "operator" language is Soviet development, trials, and museum custody rather than fielded army units.
