Historical overview
Object 640 Black Eagle was not a production tank. It was a Russian prototype or demonstrator associated with Omsktransmash and the KBTM design bureau, developed from the T-80 industrial and technical base after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Black Eagle emerged from the post-Soviet Russian armored-vehicle crisis. It also excludes Object 195/T-95, which was a separate Russian future tank effort, and T-80UM2, which the cited accounts explicitly tracks separately because it is often conflated with Black Eagle. Paulson then recorded a more substantial Omsk showing: a seven-roadwheel hull, Western-style bustle turret, visible mobility demonstration, and show-board claims including a three-man crew, 48-ton weight, 1,500-hp turbine, 125-mm 2A46M-4 gun, and possible 140-mm gun option. The project did not become a Russian production tank. Later Russian press coverage included a 2009 account in Nezavisimaya Gazeta/NVO quoting a Ministry of Defense official denying active work on a new-generation Black Eagle and stating that the seen vehicle was experimental and incomplete. That source is not established as definitive on every technical detail, but it is important evidence for the official non-adoption narrative and the dispute over whether the vehicle was a working prototype, a running mock-up, or a partially equipped technology demonstrator. Design and performance
Object 640 retained the broad Russian/T-80 layout of a low-profile MBT with a forward driver, central fighting compartment, and rear powerpack, but the Omsk concept rearranged the turret and ammunition architecture. The 1999 demonstrator used an elongated chassis with seven road wheels per side, a major visual departure from the six-roadwheel T-80U hull seen or inferred in earlier appearances. Show-card data reported by ARMOR listed a remotely controlled 12.7-mm NSVT/NSTV-type anti-aircraft machine gun, AINET programmable ammunition capability, and a loading module designated DV-EBS. The 1999 demonstrator's reported 48-ton weight would imply a power-to-weight ratio of roughly 31 hp/t if the 1,500-hp figure is taken as installed output; if the GTD-1250G figure reflected the actual powerpack, the ratio would be lower. The design retained a three-man crew. Rostec states that the commander and gunner had travel and combat positions, with both lowering into the hull in combat to reduce hit probability. Production, operators, and combat record
Object 640 belongs to the troubled post-Soviet Russian armored industry rather than to a production program. The relevant industrial actors were Omsktransmash and the Omsk KBTM design organization; both were associated with the T-80 line. Later official sources place Omsktransmash within the Uralvagonzavod/Rostec structure, but at the time of Black Eagle's appearance Russian tank production was fragmented and intensely competitive.
