Historical overview
Object 167 occupies an important but easily misunderstood place in Soviet tank development. It was neither a serial T-62 nor the T-72 itself. It was an experimental medium tank/early MBT testbed developed at Uralvagonzavod/Factory No. 183 in Nizhny Tagil under the design tradition associated with L. N. Kartsev. The base vehicle retained a four-man crew and the 115 mm U-5TS smoothbore gun, but introduced a much-improved running gear and a 700 hp V-26 diesel engine. Its technical significance came from the fact that the Soviet tank establishment was trying to reconcile three pressures: the need to replace or improve the T-54/T-55/T-62 line quickly, the desire for more firepower and future armor growth, and the parallel push toward the more radical Kharkiv Object 432/T-64. The base Object 167 was a prototype rather than a production tank. It offered better mobility, a more modern suspension concept, and growth potential over the T-62, but it was not adopted. Later Object 167-related work explored three major directions: Object 167Zh loading-mechanism work for the 115 mm gun; Object 167M, also discussed as T-62B, with a 125 mm D-81 gun, carousel-type automatic loader, three-man crew, and composite armor; and Object 167T, a gas-turbine experimental vehicle. Its largest legacy came after its immediate rejection. The Victory Museum summarizes the later T-72/Object 172 as a design that used the chassis and engine-transmission constructions of Object 167 while replacing the T-64-style loading system with the Uralvagonzavod automatic loader developed for a modernized T-62. That does not mean Object 167 became the T-72 unchanged. It means that the more conservative Tagil engineering path - robust running gear, growth margin, diesel-centered powerpack, and a simpler autoloader philosophy - survived the early 1960s procurement defeat and reappeared in the Object 172/T-72 program. The background to Object 167 was the Soviet Army's shift from the T-54/T-55 generation toward tanks with higher muzzle velocity, better night fighting equipment, stronger nuclear-battlefield protection, and greater growth capacity. The T-62 introduced the 115 mm smoothbore gun into service, but it did so while retaining many conceptual ties to earlier Soviet medium tanks. The Tank Museum describes the T-62 as the first tank to carry a smoothbore gun instead of a rifled tank gun and notes the larger turret ring required for the bigger weapon. Sources
By the early 1960s, the Soviet tank design system had several overlapping centers of gravity. Kharkiv, under the Morozov design lineage, was pushing the radical Object 432 that became the T-64. Nizhny Tagil, under Factory No. 183/Uralvagonzavod, had the production and practical improvement background behind the T-54/T-55/T-62 line. This created a doctrinal and industrial tension. The army wanted a future tank with more firepower, stronger protection, and a smaller crew, but it also needed something that could be produced in large numbers and maintained by the Soviet industrial base. Object 167 reflects this tension. It was a Tagil answer to the same future-war problem addressed by the Kharkiv Object 432: how to build a post-T-55, post-T-62 tank that could fight NATO armor in a nuclear-age battlefield. The Tagil solution was initially evolutionary - better running gear, more power, existing smoothbore firepower - and then became more ambitious through Object 167M and the autoloader/125 mm/composite armor studies. The Soviet requirement was also shaped by production realism. A tank can be advanced on paper yet fail if it is not mature enough for volume manufacturing. Conversely, a conservative design can become strategically decisive if it is rugged, producible, and upgradable. Object 167 did not win immediate procurement, but it kept a Tagil technical path alive at a moment when the T-64 appeared to be the official future. The account includes the base Object 167, the Object 167Zh automatic-loading strand, Object 167M/T-62B, Object 167D as a protection variant, Object 167T and Object 167TU gas-turbine work, the related Object 166TM testbed, and the Object 172/T-72 influence. It excludes a full production history of the T-62, the T-64, and the T-72 except where those vehicles are required to explain Object 167. Classification and boundary issues are central to the file. Object 167 is often described as a T-62 improvement because it came out of the same industrial and tactical context and shared a 115 mm gun and T-62-like turret. It is also often described as a T-72 precursor because Object 172/T-72 drew on Object 167 chassis and engine-transmission ideas. The base design used the 115 mm U-5TS smoothbore gun and a T-62-derived fighting compartment, but it was not just a T-62 with a different engine. Its most visible change was a new running gear arrangement with smaller-diameter road wheels, return rollers, improved torsion-bar suspension, and hydraulic vane dampers. Autoloading work preceded the most ambitious Object 167M concept. Pavlov and Pavlov describe autumn 1960 work on a loading mechanism for the 115 mm U-5TS under the "Zhelud" theme; a project using this loading mechanism was identified as Object 167Zh. In January 1962, a Factory No. 183 technical council discussed future-tank principles such as a three-man crew, automatic loading, significant frontal protection, a V-2-line diesel rather than a new two-stroke, tracks compatible with T-54/T-55 practice, a running gear suitable for growth to roughly 40-42 t, and a basketless loading concept that preserved crew passage between the driver and the fighting compartment. In May 1962, the Object 167M/T-62B concept appeared. It sought to turn the improved chassis into a much more modern tank: 125 mm D-81 gun, carousel-type separate-case automatic loading, a three-man crew, composite hull and turret protection, and a higher-output V-35 diesel. In early 1964, this proposal was reviewed as initiative work. The review acknowledged its improvements in firepower, mechanized loading, armor, and mobility, but judged it essentially a new tank parallel to Object 432 and inferior in several key dimensions, including size, shell and anti-radiation protection, fire effectiveness, and technical execution. The gas-turbine branch developed in parallel. Object 167T used a GTD-3T turbine derived from helicopter-engine work by Omsk OKB-29. Pavlov and Pavlov date the first trial run to 11 April 1963 and describe tests through 1965. Rossiyskaya Gazeta presents the Object 167T as a 1964 modification of the 1961 Object 167 with the GTD-3T in place of the V-26 diesel. Both accounts agree on the essential point: it was a serious gas-turbine experiment, but fuel consumption, range, air filtration, braking, and cost made it unsuitable for production in that form. The final chapter of Object 167 development was indirect. The later Object 172/T-72 did not simply copy Object 167, but Victory Museum emphasizes that the T-72/Object 172 used the chassis and engine-transmission constructions of Object 167 and the Uralvagonzavod automatic loader path developed for modernized T-62 work. This is the most important reason to preserve Object 167 as its own research file: the tank failed as a procurement item, but its engineering descendants became central to Soviet armored mass production. Design and performance
Object 167 retained the familiar Soviet rear-engine, central fighting-compartment, front-driver arrangement. The base vehicle had four crew members: driver, gunner, commander, and loader. Object 167M moved toward a three-man crew through automatic loading. The base tank therefore sat between the T-62 and the later T-72 conceptually: still a conventional manually loaded medium tank, but with mobility and growth features that pointed beyond the T-62. The upper front plate is given as 100 mm at 60 degrees and the lower front plate as 80 mm at 55 degrees. Sides are listed at 70 mm. The vehicle was fitted with Soviet anti-atomic/NBC protection arrangements designated PAZ and smoke-generation equipment designated TDA. Sources
Turret frontal armor is listed as 188 mm at 33 degrees. The larger family included later conceptual work for composite turret protection on Object 167M, including a much stronger front-turret package in the specification comparison. Sources
For the base Object 167, the best tabulated armor data found in the cited record are: upper hull front 100 mm/60 degrees, lower front 80 mm/55 degrees, side 70 mm, and turret front 188 mm/33 degrees. For Object 167M, Pavlov and Pavlov give a composite frontal hull package of 80 mm steel + 110 mm fiberglass + 30 mm steel at 68 degrees, with side screens and a composite-style turret front entry listed at 460 mm package thickness. The base Object 167 carried the 115 mm U-5TS smoothbore gun, the same broad armament family associated with the T-62. Object 167M was designed around the 125 mm D-81 smoothbore gun, with D-83 122 mm work noted as a possible alternative in the broader study. Sources
Object 167M data list a PKT machine gun in the same general coaxial role. Some surviving images and secondary descriptions show an Object 167 fitted experimentally with 9M14 Malyutka/AT-3 missile rails; the exact test configuration and ammunition stowage require stronger primary-qualification. Base Object 167 ammunition was unitary 115 mm ammunition, with 40 rounds listed. Object 167M was designed around separate-case 125 mm ammunition: 40 total rounds, 21 in a mechanized carousel loader. The base vehicle used a two-plane Meteor stabilizer. Object 167M is listed with the Livyen stabilizer. These details matter because the Object 167M proposal was not merely an armament swap; it combined gun, stabilizer, autoloader, and crew-layout changes into a new tactical system. Sources
Pavlov and Pavlov list night devices TVN-2, TKN-2, and TPN-1 for the base Object 167, along with a TSh2B-41 hinged telescopic sight. Rossiyskaya Gazeta lists TSh-2 and TPN-1 for Object 167T. Sources
The base Object 167 used the V-26 diesel rated at 515 kW/700 hp. Pavlov and Pavlov list specific power at 14 kW/t or 19.1 hp/t, a reinforced simple mechanical transmission, five forward and one reverse gears, and planetary steering mechanisms. Object 167M was planned with V-35 power levels of 551 kW/750 hp or higher in some planning data. Object 167T replaced the diesel with a GTD-3T turbine and required transmission/fuel-system changes. The running gear was the signature improvement. Object 167 used individual torsion bars with hydraulic vane dampers, smaller road wheels, return rollers, rear drive wheels, and a dynamic roadwheel travel listed as 242 mm. This distinguished the tank from earlier T-54/T-55/T-62 patterns and explains why later Object 172/T-72 lineage sources emphasize Object 167 chassis inheritance. Sources

The base four-man arrangement preserved a human loader and unitary ammunition. Object 167M, by contrast, was explicitly designed around a three-man crew and a carousel-style loader that did not trap the crew in the same way criticized in some Kharkiv autoloader arrangements. Production, operators, and combat record
Object 167 did not enter serial production. The cited accounts calls it a prototype-only family and a prototype series, while the prototype tab and classification tab flag the record as uncertain for detailed variant reconstruction. Sources
The industrial center was Factory No. 183 at Nizhny Tagil, later Uralvagonzavod. The same industrial ecosystem had to balance experimental design work with mass-production obligations. Object 167M/T-62B was an initiative modernization effort by the Tagil side, not a clean-sheet state-selected production tank. Pavlov and Pavlov portray the 1964 review as acknowledging technical improvements but rejecting the proposal because it amounted to a parallel new medium tank alongside Object 432 and did not beat it decisively. The production lesson is that Object 167 had industrial value even without production. Its running gear and engine-transmission ideas could be matured and carried forward. Victory Museum's T-72 page states that the later Object 172/T-72 used the chassis and engine-transmission compartment constructions of Object 167. Object 167 had no normal operator in the sense of field service. It was operated within the Soviet test and design establishment. The practical users were Factory No. 183/Uralvagonzavod designers, Soviet trial authorities, and later museum organizations. Sources

Object 167 has no verified combat history. It was a prototype/testbed family. This is an important negative finding because Object 167 can be confused with the T-62 and T-72, both of which have extensive service and combat histories. all combat discussion is described as comparative context only. If writing for a general audience, avoid phrases such as "Object 167 fought" or "Object 167 served" unless the statement is explicitly about test service. The T-62 saw widespread service and the T-72 became a major production MBT, but Object 167 itself remained in the developmental and museum categories. Sources
The absence of combat service does not demonstrate insignificance. Many decisive armored-vehicle ideas pass through prototypes that never fight. Object 167's story is strongest when it is presented as the engineering workshop behind later Soviet mass production, not as a battlefield tank. Sources
Legacy and historical evidence
The best comparison set is not a battlefield lineup but an engineering decision map: T-62/Object 166, Object 432/T-64, Object 167M, and the later Object 172/T-72. NATO contemporaries such as M60A1, Centurion upgrades, Chieftain, and Leopard 1 are useful only to establish the pressure for high-velocity armament and mobility. Sources
Overall battlefield value can only be inferred. As a base 115 mm tank, Object 167 would likely have been a more mobile and growth-capable T-62-like vehicle. As Object 167M, it pointed toward a more formidable three-man 125 mm MBT, but it lost the procurement argument. Surviving vehicles and museum display are crucial to modern reputation. Object 167 examples have been photographed at Kubinka/Patriot Park, and Object 167T has been photographed at the Nizhny Tagil/Uralvagonzavod museum. These displays give the tank greater visibility than many failed prototypes, but museum display can also encourage visual overinterpretation: the visible external configuration may represent a late display/restoration state, not every configuration tested in the 1960s.
