Medium Mark D

The Medium Mark D was an experimental British attempt to combine sustained speed, trench-crossing ability, and protected firepower.

Purpose and classification

The Medium Mark D was an experimental British attempt to combine sustained speed, trench-crossing ability, and protected firepower. Its origins belonged to the last year of the First World War, but its actual vehicle development continued into the early 1920s. It never became an operational tank family. Describing it simply as a tank introduced in 1918 would confuse the requirement and design phase with later construction and testing. Sources

The requirement is associated with J. F. C. Fuller's Plan 1919 and the desire for faster exploitation after a breakthrough. Philip Johnson supplied the central engineering approach: flexible tracks and a wire-rope suspension intended to permit much higher speeds than contemporary heavy tanks. The resulting family includes the standard Medium D, widened D* and D** forms, and D Modified, also called Mark DM. Related light-infantry and tropical experiments belong in the development story, but their existence does not demonstrate a successful production program. Sources

Two the cited accounts family entries cover overlapping portions of this history. The names identify the same development history rather than separate production totals. The similarly named Irish Vickers Medium D is outside this family. The American M1922 appears as a possible technical-influence comparison, not another British Medium D. Sources

From requirement to postwar experiments

Johnson had worked on modifications to existing tanks before taking charge of experimental work at Dollis Hill. A converted Mark V served as a testbed for the suspension and track ideas. That testbed is important evidence of development activity, but a speed reported for it cannot be substituted for the measured performance of every later Medium D configuration. Sources

The published development account places the start of detailed work and the full-size wooden mock-up in late 1918, with the first completed Medium D reported in June 1919. It also retains earlier prototype-order dates and conflicting manufacturer allocations. Those statements require comparison with original contracts and trial reports; this history does not force them into a seamless sequence by changing a date. Sources

After the Armistice, the program pursued improvements rather than immediate operational issue. The narrow vehicle proved troublesome in water, encouraging the widened D* and D** arrangements. The later DM line introduced a Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engine and altered upper-hull and escape arrangements. Accounts place the end of Johnson's development organization and Medium D work in March 1923, based on its secondary-source account. This is a development chronology, not a record of withdrawal from combat service. Sources

Layout, armament, and crew

Unlike a turreted interwar medium tank, the Medium D placed its fighting positions in a fixed forward compartment, with the engine behind. The driver occupied a relatively high position associated with the rear of that compartment. The long, narrow form and the shape of the track runs were deliberate departures from the familiar heavy-tank rhomboid. The arrangement nevertheless created practical compromises in obstacle negotiation, visibility, and the amount of usable space. Sources

Three Hotchkiss machine guns are the principal armament described for the machine-gun configuration. A short six-pounder installation belongs to the proposal history; it cannot be written as a weapon fitted to the entire family. Exact ammunition stowage, sight models, and detailed gun-mount arrangements remain incompletely documented. There is no basis here for reconstructing a complete fire-control or radio installation. The account commonly gives a three-man crew for the principal configuration. Its discussion of heat, noise, visibility, and escape explains design concerns rather than providing measured ergonomic trial results. Sources

Power, flexible tracks, and performance qualifications

The distinctive suspension used wire ropes as part of a flexible supporting and track-linking system. Its intended benefit was to accommodate ground irregularities at speeds beyond those normally associated with the earlier heavy tanks. The available evidence also records reliability problems: flexibility and speed ambitions did not by themselves establish a durable field system. Sources

Powerplant descriptions differ by configuration. The early vehicle is associated with a Puma engine of roughly 240 horsepower, the D** with a higher-output installation, and the DM with an Eagle VIII of roughly 360 horsepower. Sources

Performance figures need equally careful labels. A requirement of approximately twenty miles per hour, reported higher running speeds, and a proposed two-hundred-mile endurance are not interchangeable test results. The lighter derivative's reported high speed does not establish the standard Medium D's performance. Weight, width, engine output, and water stability changed across the project. Sources

Construction, trials, and the limits of the record

Production accounting is one of the family's unresolved problems. Published accounts give a ten-prototype order account, competing manufacturer allocations, small completed-vehicle counts, and successive DM funding or order figures. Ordered vehicles, completed prototypes, and later redesigns refer to distinct categories. Adding every figure would create an invented fleet. Sources

The vehicle's documented role was experimentation. The principal concerns included speed, track behavior, reliability, and the stability of a narrow hull during water trials. Widening the design was a response to a problem, not proof that every widened version achieved an accepted amphibious capability. The available evidence does not establish operational units, combat employment, or an export fleet. Sources

Consequently, the Medium D cannot be assessed through a combat-loss rate or a record of battlefield victories. Claims that it would have transformed a 1919 campaign are counterfactual arguments. They require assumptions about manufacture, crew training, fuel supply, and maintenance that the experimental program did not demonstrate in service. Sources

Relationships, legacy, and visual evidence

The Medium D's significance is the scale of its mobility ambition and the gap between an inventive experimental system and a serviceable tank. The available evidence associates its flexible-track work with later experimentation, including the American M1922, but a resemblance or a secondary-source influence statement is not a complete documentary chain for every proposed descendant.
