Overview
The Medium Mark A Whippet was a British machine-gun-armed tank developed to complement the slower heavy tanks. The requirement developed from the limitations of the slow heavy tank and the desire for a vehicle that could exploit opportunities after a defensive position had been penetrated. Accounts place design activity across 1916–1917 and records the early machine sometimes called the Tritton Chaser. The production order was for 200 vehicles. The source trail gives serials in the A200–A399 range and a delivery account divided between vehicles available by summer 1918 and later completions. Layout and armament
The production Whippet placed its engines and fuel toward the front and its fighting compartment at the rear. The polygonal fighting body was fixed. Machine-gun positions covered different directions, rather than using a single turret to turn all the weapons toward a target. Sources

The account dates the Whippet's first fighting to 26 March 1918, while recording different place labels in the consulted accounts. Hébuterne and Mailly-Maillet remains unconfirmed against the unit's actual movements rather than merged into a precise claim by assumption.
