The cited accounts uses 1978-1980, and in March 1979 the Secretary of State for Defence stated that the government had announced the decision the previous September to proceed with project definition of a new main battle tank to replace Chieftain in the late 1980s. Some museum and enthusiast accounts describe British design work beginning earlier, in the wake of FV4211, JagdChieftain, and the Anglo-German Future Main Battle Tank. Arcane AFVs quotes Tank Museum information stating that British design work began around 1973, but this appears to refer to conceptual prehistory rather than the formal MBT-80 project-definition decision. The project belonged to the British Ministry of Defence tank-development ecosystem centered on Chertsey establishments such as FVRDE/MVEE and later RARDE. The intended powerplant was settled in 1979. The government selected a version of the Rolls-Royce Motors CV12 diesel over the American AGT1500 gas turbine after evaluation. The official explanation was that the CV12 built on an existing design developed for the Iranian main battle tank, could be turbocharged to 1,500 bhp, had development potential, and avoided the substantial MBT-80 modification and higher expected fuel consumption associated with the AGT1500 and its XM1-linked transmission. The project-definition phase was near completion, but the government stated that full development and production looked likely to take longer and cost more than originally thought. The intended vehicle was a conventional turreted main battle tank with a four-man crew. This is supported by the Tank Museum information quoted by Arcane AFVs and is consistent with British practice in Chieftain, Shir 2, Challenger 1, and Challenger 2. Sources

ATR2 is described as an automotive test rig with a mixed steel and aluminum structure: steel at the front, aluminum at the rear, and a stainless-steel sandwich layer at the joining interface. This was apparently an attempt to save weight and explore mixed-material construction. The same source reports visible cracking at the rear plate joints. Sources

The turret story is the most uncertain part of MBT-80. Arcane AFVs states that the turret and hull of 99SP27 do not belong together and that the displayed turret was part of a research program for offset mounts. The same page identifies the Weapon System Demonstrator / Fire Control Rig, mounted on an FV4030 hull, as more closely related to the MBT-80 weapon system concept. TankNutDave, by contrast, says the turret on ATR2 is believed to be the final MBT-80 turret and suggests a 110 mm gun, but this conflicts with the 120 mm narrative in other sources and is treated as uncertain. Official statements identify Challenger as having Chobham armor, and secondary sources consistently connect MBT-80 with Chobham as well. The museum text quoted by Arcane AFVs states that the ATR2 skeleton would have been clad in Chobham armor. The most defensible open-source claim is a 120 mm rifled main gun concept. Published accounts describe "120 mm / advanced armor," and the Tank Museum information quoted by Arcane describes a 120 mm rifled gun. Some secondary specifications name the RARDE EXP-28M1. Secondary sources list a 7.62 mm machine gun in the commander's cupola, typically identified as an L37A1 GPMG. This is plausible given British practice but not confirmed in the official statements consulted here. Sources

No final ammunition stowage figure is verified. The intended gun likely would have used British 120 mm separate-loading ammunition types evolving from the L11/L30 lineage, including kinetic, HESH, smoke, and possibly other natures, but the exact MBT-80 ammunition suite remain open. Sources

Secondary sources emphasize a highly advanced fire-control system with digital processing and hunter-killer features. Arcane AFVs describes a Fire Control Rig with a digital databus, a digital fire-control computer, and trialed two-axis stabilized sights. The PANTILI sight described by Arcane AFVs - a panoramic thermal imager with laser integration - is one of the most interesting MBT-80-related technologies. It was reportedly fitted on the loader side of the roof and made imagery available to commander and gunner. In 1981 the government separately announced thermal-imaging sight work for Chieftain and Challenger with Barr and Stroud, showing that night-fighting capability was a central British armored-force priority. The engine choice is one of the best-supported technical facts: a Rolls-Royce Motors CV12 diesel, turbocharged to 1,500 bhp, was selected over the American AGT1500. MBT-80's most direct legacy was not a production vehicle but a set of design studies, powerpack choices, fire-control experiments, and procurement lessons. The July 1980 statement explicitly said that tank development building on MBT-80 work would continue even as the program itself was discontinued. Sources

The Challenger decision did not end the larger Chieftain replacement problem. The Tank Museum's 2023 archive article shows that by 1987 the Future Tank Steering Group was still weighing options such as upgraded Challenger, Challenger 2, Leopard 2, Abrams M1A1, and Leclerc; Challenger 1 was considered an interim measure in that later replacement process. Surviving artifacts keep the program visible. The most recognizable is the ATR2 / 99SP27 display vehicle photographed at Bovington in 2014. Its angular shape has encouraged online fascination and has sometimes caused overconfident claims about a finished MBT-80 prototype.
