Magach

The Magach family was the Israel Defense Forces’ large Patton-based armor fleet: M48 and M60 tanks reworked through successive Israeli upgrade standards.

Yad La-Shiryon’s curator history states that the IDF’s Magach holdings reached roughly 2,000 tanks at their peak, which is better interpreted as fleet scale rather than a single production total. The biggest controversies are nomenclature and classification. “Magach” is often explained through folk acronyms; the Yad La-Shiryon curator article rejects those acronym stories as urban legends and traces the name to the Hebrew idea of a battering ram. Magach mattered less because it was an elegant single design than because it was an adaptable, numerous, combat-tested modernization ecosystem. It gave Israel time, mass, and technical experience while Merkava became the front-line national tank. Israel’s early armored force depended on a mix of improvised and imported types: Shermans, AMX-13s, Centurions, and later Patton-series tanks. The strategic problem in the late 1950s and 1960s was not merely to buy a better tank; it was to field enough reliable armored mass against neighbors receiving Soviet T-54, T-55, and later T-62 tanks, while coping with political limits on direct arms supply. The M48 was attractive because it offered a modern turreted medium / main battle tank platform, a large turret ring, room for modernization, and eventual compatibility with the British-designed 105 mm L7 / U.S. M68 gun family. The doctrine problem was also changing. The 1967 Six-Day War seemed to confirm Israeli confidence in mobile armored maneuver. The 1968–1971 War of Attrition and especially the 1973 Yom Kippur War exposed a harsher truth: tanks operating against dense infantry anti-tank weapons, Saggers, RPGs, mines, and prepared defenses required better survivability, fire control, crew protection, and combined-arms integration. Industrial constraints mattered. Israel could not simply replace the whole fleet overnight with Merkava tanks. The practical answer was to upgrade existing U.S. hulls: replace gasoline engines where possible, standardize 105 mm armament, add local radios and stowage, improve fire control, add Urdan low-profile cupolas, fit smoke and fire-suppression systems, and later add Blazer ERA or passive armor packages. Development and variants

Magach covered Israeli developments from M48 and M60. Turkish M60T/Sabra was a later export modernization with design connections, but a separate national program. Sources

The key boundary issue is that Magach is a modernization and service-designation family rather than a discrete manufacturing program. A U.S.-built M48A5 can be described as an M48A5 by U.S. configuration, as a Magach 5 by Israeli service designation, or as part of the Patton lineage by armor historians. The second boundary issue is Pereh. Pereh looked like a tank and used a Magach 5 lineage chassis, but its main armament was a concealed missile system, not the 105 mm gun. M60 parent vehicle was accepted into U.S. service in December 1960. The Magach family itself, however, is better described as a 1960s-to-1980s Israeli upgrade lineage. Published accounts describe development/start as “1960s-1980s,” while Yad La-Shiryon’s curator article ties the first Patton acquisitions to mid-1960s purchases from West German Army stocks with U.S. approval and secrecy. Initial Israeli Pattons included M48A1 and M48A2C vehicles supplied via West Germany and the United States. Six-Day War service included M48A2C vehicles, and the postwar fleet expanded with captured Jordanian M48s. These vehicles became the seedbed for Magach 3 modernization. Magach 3 was the decisive early standard: a Patton upgraded with the 105 mm M68 / L7-family gun, a diesel power pack, local communications, and other Israeli systems. The Yom Kippur War made Magach survivability a central technical problem. Israeli sources describe postwar changes including add-on protection, smoke systems, loader machine guns, fire-extinguishing equipment, replacement of hazardous/flame-prone hydraulic fluids, and development or installation of Blazer-type reactive armor. The M60/M60A1 path produced Magach 6-series variants. Yad La-Shiryon’s variant history records Magach 6A M60A1 purchases in 1972, subsequent M60A1 RISE-based Magach 6B vehicles, and later Gal, Batash, Nachal Oz, and M60A3-related subvariants. The exact subvariant boundaries are not always consistent between sources, so published accounts describe them as configuration clusters rather than perfectly separate production models. After the 1982 Lebanon War, Israel developed Magach 7 as a more radical M60-based upgrade with substantial passive armor and local systems. Yad La-Shiryon describes Magach 7 as a response to the limits of earlier Blazer protection against advanced anti-tank threats; secondary technical sources put Magach 7 around 1984–1985 and cite roughly 300 conversions, 105 mm M68 armament, a 908 hp AVDS-1790-5A, and a 55-ton combat weight. Pereh was a Magach-based missile carrier hidden in the form of a tank. Army Recognition reported Israel’s official 2015 unveiling of the system and described a Magach chassis, an enlarged turret, a dummy cannon, and a concealed launcher for 12 Tamuz / Spike NLOS missiles. Design and performance

Magach retained the conventional M48/M60 layout: driver in the front hull, turret centered, engine/transmission at the rear, and a four-person crew of commander, gunner, loader, and driver. M48-based Magachs used the M48 hull family with rounded cast forms and six road wheels per side. M60-based Magachs used the M60/M60A1/M60A3 hull family, which carried the 105 mm gun from the outset and offered a more modern baseline. Early Magachs retained Patton turrets but often received Urdan low-profile cupolas, local machine-gun mounts, and communications changes. Magach 7 used a visibly remodeled turret front and sides with wedge-like passive armor packages; Pereh used an enlarged turret-like housing to disguise a missile launcher. The underlying M48/M60 structures used cast and rolled steel. Israeli upgrades added Blazer reactive armor and, on Magach 7, large passive modules. Early M48s carried the 90 mm M41 gun. The central Magach modernization path converted M48-based vehicles to the 105 mm M68 / L7-family gun, while M60-based Magachs already used the 105 mm M68 lineage. Pereh is the exception: it used a dummy cannon for disguise and carried Tamuz / Spike NLOS missiles as its real weapon system. Secondary weapons varied by base vehicle and Israeli fitting. U.S. baseline vehicles carried coaxial machine guns and turret/cupola weapons such as the M85.50-caliber gun; Israeli vehicles commonly added FN MAG / M60-type 7.62 mm mounts and often a heavy machine gun over the main gun for training, ranging, and urban fire. Ammunition stowage varied by base tank and upgrade. M48A5 data gives a 105 mm ammunition load of about 54 rounds; M60 and M60A3 data shows approximately 57 to 63 105 mm rounds depending on subvariant. Sources

The family spans optical coincidence rangefinders and early ballistic systems through Israeli Gal, Nachal Oz, Baz, and M60A3-derived laser/thermal configurations. M48/M60 baseline sights evolved through U.S. improvements, and Israeli upgrades added local day/night equipment, laser rangefinding, and later thermal sleeves and thermal/night systems. The exact fit depended heavily on subvariant and update period. [AFVDB-M60; YLS-Mass-2020] Sources

The key early change was replacement of gasoline power plants with AVDS-1790-series diesels and compatible CD-850 transmissions. M60-based Magachs generally used AVDS-1790 diesel power packs; late Magach 7C is commonly described with a roughly 900/908 hp AVDS-1790-5A engine to restore mobility under added armor weight. The Patton-family torsion-bar suspension remained central. Later Israeli upgrades included improved tracks and, in some configurations, suspension reinforcements to cope with heavier armor. Mobility varied by weight and engine fit. Baseline M60-series figures are around 30 mph / 48 km/h road speed and long road range with diesel power; late Magach 7 added armor weight but offset some of it with higher power. Protection evolved from baseline armor to smoke grenade systems, Spectronix fire suppression, high-flash-point fluids, Blazer ERA, passive armor modules, laser-warning equipment on some later variants, and heavy side/turret packages. The U.S. platforms were robust, spacious, and maintainable, especially once dieselized and modernized. Their weakness was not basic mechanical unsuitability but age, weight growth, fire vulnerability in early configurations, and the burden of keeping many subvariant standards in service. Production, operators, and combat record

Magach production is best understood as conversion, rebuild, and upgrade work on existing U.S.-built tanks. The base hulls came from the large American M48 and M60 production ecosystem. The Tank Museum gives M48 production as 12,942 by 1959 and emphasizes the Patton lineage’s long design-service life; AFV Database details U.S. M48A3 and M48A5 conversions; AFV Database and Fort Douglas Museum provide M60 baseline production and performance context. Israeli industry and the IDF Ordnance / maintenance system transformed those imported hulls. Yad La-Shiryon identifies local organizations and firms such as the IDF/MANTAK environment and Israeli industry in the Magach 7 armor effort, and describes Rafael/IMI involvement in the Pereh missile carrier. Urdan cupolas, Spectronix fire extinguishing equipment, Blazer-type armor packages, local fire controls, and Israeli communications all belong to this national upgrade system. No reliable monthly or yearly Magach conversion series was found in open sources. The published account’s “hundreds converted,” Yad La-Shiryon’s roughly 2,000-tank peak fleet statement, and secondary “around 300 Magach 7 conversions” cannot be combined into a single production total. The primary Magach operator was Israel. The cited accounts accounts connect Israel to M48/Magach service from the 1960s and to Magach 6/7 service from the 1970s into reserve and upgraded forms. The 2014 Yad La-Shiryon farewell article reports that the IDF said goodbye to the Magach/Patton tank and to Brigade 600, leaving Merkava tanks as the IDF’s remaining tank type. Training and reserve use lasted long after Merkava became the preferred front-line tank. The farewell article’s competition anecdote—that Magach crews had recently performed strongly in an accuracy competition—fits the broader pattern: old platforms could still be effective in trained hands, especially in reserve and training contexts. M48/Magach participation in 1967 is source-sensitive because not all acquired tanks were ready and because later designations were retroactively applied. Yad La-Shiryon distinguishes M48A2C combat use from M48A1 vehicles that were not yet ready, and notes that captured Jordanian M48s later entered the Israeli Magach 3 conversion stream. Magach 3 became one of the emblematic Suez Canal Pattons. The upgraded 105 mm/diesel configuration fit Israel’s need for longer-range gunfire, better logistics than gasoline M48s, and more standardized tank fighting along fixed fronts. [YLS-Mass-2020] Sources

Yom Kippur was the family’s defining trauma and technical accelerator. Magach tanks fought in the Sinai and were heavily exposed to anti-tank guided missiles, RPGs, mines, artillery, and intense armored combat. Yad La-Shiryon’s history ties later improvements—ERA/protection, smoke systems, fire suppression, machine-gun changes, and fluid changes—to 1973 lessons. By 1982, Magach variants carried more survivability equipment, including Blazer-type ERA on some vehicles. Lebanon’s urban, mountain, and close terrain reinforced the need for better all-around protection, smoke, infantry cooperation, and local fire-control improvements. Magach’s biggest legacy was technical and institutional. It taught the IDF how to absorb a foreign tank in large numbers, modify it locally, and use combat feedback to drive protection, fire-control, communications, maintenance, and crew-survivability changes.
