M2 Medium Tank

The M2 Medium Tank occupies an important but easily misunderstood position in American armored development.

A medium tank between experiment and mobilization

The M2 Medium Tank occupies an important but easily misunderstood position in American armored development. It was a small production family intended to provide a modern medium tank, but its principal contribution became training and industrial preparation rather than battlefield service. Accounts place the production M2 and M2A1 alongside the earlier T5 development vehicles. It does not make every experiment, training modification or later descendant an additional production tank. The familiar total is 112 production vehicles: eighteen M2s and ninety-four M2A1s. That remains the published preferred account, not a newly reconciled factory ledger. Its research also preserves a different contract and acceptance narrative involving 126 and eighty-four vehicles. Those figures describe potentially different accounting events and cannot be averaged or silently discarded. The family has no confirmed overseas combat service in the evidence assembled here. Calling it an unsuccessful combat veteran would therefore misstate both its use and its importance. Sources

From the T5 program to a changed requirement

The American medium-tank problem of the 1930s was as much institutional and industrial as mechanical. Limited procurement, small armored formations and competing ideas about tank employment restricted development. The T5 program sought a practical route forward by adapting components and arrangements already associated with light tanks. It combined a central gun turret with extensive machine-gun coverage, while attempting to keep weight within the limits of existing infrastructure and mechanical practice. Sources

Development was a sequence of changing test states, not a single finished prototype. Early vehicles could carry incomplete or dummy armament; subsequent work altered armor, the driver's position, suspension details and the engine installation. Production M2s followed, and the M2A1 introduced a larger turret and other improvements. Meanwhile, fighting in Europe changed the standard by which the design was judged. Plans to manufacture the M2A1 at much greater scale were redirected toward a medium tank with a 75 mm gun. This makes the M2-to-M3 transition a change in requirement and production planning, not evidence that the two vehicles belong to one variant list. Sources

A tall hull and a crowded armament scheme

The basic arrangement placed the engine at the rear and the transmission and final drive at the front. A tall, riveted fighting compartment supported a comparatively small turret. Sponson and bow machine-gun positions gave the vehicle its distinctive appearance. Deflector plates intended to redirect machine-gun fire into trenches illustrate how strongly the design reflected ideas about suppressing dispersed infantry rather than concentrating all useful firepower in a larger turret. The production family's turreted 37 mm weapon represented an advance over an exclusively machine-gun tank, but it soon looked inadequate for a medium tank expected to meet wartime opposition. The accounts give conflicting M3 and M5 references rather than treating them as interchangeable labels. Machine-gun totals also depend on whether fixed, flexible and optional antiaircraft positions are being counted. A maximum possible fit is not proof that every vehicle carried that fit. Armor thickness likewise belongs to a particular plate and configuration, not a universal figure for the whole vehicle. Sources

Automotive development and the people inside

A rear-mounted Wright radial engine and vertical-volute-spring suspension connected the family to an emerging American mechanical tradition. The suspension used paired road wheels in bogies and offered a workable basis for further development. Changes between the M2 and M2A1 included the engine installation and other automotive details, but headline power figures remain uncertain. Net and gross ratings, as well as supercharged and earlier engines, are not directly interchangeable measurements. Sources

The source also retains differences in published crew complements, weight, track width and maximum speed. A road-speed claim alone says little about sustained movement, maintenance demands or crew effectiveness. Inside the vehicle, numerous weapon positions had to share the available space and attention. Small-series manufacture and service without combat

Rock Island Arsenal's small-series work and the larger industrial mobilization associated with Chrysler refer to distinct categories. A plan, a contract, a completed vehicle and an Army acceptance are separate events. The projected expansion of M2A1 manufacture helped establish the context for a purpose-built tank production system, even though the intended product changed before that plan became mass M2A1 output. Counting the redirected order as completed tanks would greatly exaggerate the family's size. Sources

In service, the tanks helped prepare personnel for a rapidly expanding armored force. Training could involve driving, maintenance, gunnery and unit routines without making a vehicle suitable for overseas combat. The available evidence does not establish a foreign operator or a combat campaign for the production family. Experimental armor, weapons and flamethrower work belong in the development record, but a test installation is not automatically a fielded variant. The absence of a combat record limits the kind of battlefield assessment that can responsibly be written; it does not erase the tanks' domestic military use. Sources

What the family contributed—and what remains open

The M2's importance is clearest when it is compared with both the designs that preceded it and the American medium tanks that followed. It helped move development beyond isolated interwar experiments toward vehicles that could be manufactured, maintained and used to train larger formations. At the same time, the small main gun, tall structure and dispersed machine-gun arrangement showed how quickly a design could be overtaken by changing requirements. Sources

That is a narrower and more useful conclusion than either celebrating the tank as a battlefield success or dismissing it as an irrelevant failure. Its influence was industrial, organizational and developmental. Surviving examples and photographs can illuminate construction, but museum fittings cannot settle unresolved production details by themselves. Detailed production and acceptance dates, gun mounts, and crew arrangements remain uncertain in the cited evidence. Sources
