M1 Combat Car

The M1 Combat Car was a fully tracked, turreted armored vehicle developed for the United States Cavalry during the interwar period.

Identity and cavalry purpose

The M1 Combat Car was a fully tracked, turreted armored vehicle developed for the United States Cavalry during the interwar period. Its official name reflected the Army's division of responsibility for armored equipment rather than a wheeled chassis: physically it was a light tank. Accounts place it within cavalry experimentation with reconnaissance, security, and mobile action, alongside an Infantry tank program that followed a parallel institutional path. Sources

The 1935 date identifies the beginning of the accepted M1 production configuration, not the first American experiment with this layout. Its importance lay principally in building mechanized units, testing doctrine, and training crews before the Second World War. The available evidence does not establish overseas combat by the M1 family. Its machine-gun armament, modest protection, and mobility therefore need to be understood in that developmental setting rather than credited with an undocumented battlefield record. Sources

From T5 to production M1

The development account begins with the T5, associated with Harry Knox and Rock Island Arsenal. Trials during the early 1930s led through the T5E2 to acceptance of the M1 in 1935. This was a process of revising a workable tracked vehicle, not a single design frozen at its first appearance. The accounts distinguish the early D-shaped turret from the later octagonal form and records changes to the engine cover and other fittings. Sources

The M1E2 experiment altered the position of the rear bogie and idler, extending track contact and addressing the vehicle's pitching tendency. Revised access and fuel arrangements accompanied the longer-running-gear configuration that informed the M1A1. Diesel experiments and the M1A1E1 branch can be distinguished from ordinary petrol vehicles. Photographs of these developmental states are useful precisely because equipment, turrets, and running gear did not remain identical across the program. Sources

Hull, crew, and protection

The M1 carried four crew members. The driver and assistant occupied the front hull, with the driver on the left, while the commander and gunner worked in the turret. The engine was at the rear and the drive at the front. This arrangement concentrated the crew within a small fighting compartment and required the powertrain to pass through the vehicle. The account relates the resulting space and motion constraints to crew effectiveness and maintenance. Sources

Its riveted, face-hardened armor was light. The technical account gives different plate thicknesses for the front, sides, rear, roof, and floor, and notes a rear-plate change for the M1A1. The maximum quoted thickness does not establish a uniform hull value. Likewise, folding turret-roof arrangements and the transition from the early turret to the octagonal pattern belong to particular configuration states rather than an imagined universal M1 exterior. Weapons and crew workload

The turret carried .50-caliber and .30-caliber machine guns, supplemented by a bow weapon and provision for antiaircraft mounting. A four-person crew had to divide driving, observation, command, and firing duties; not every mounting could be served continuously. Those figures are retained by model rather than combined into one family allowance. Published accounts describe manual aiming and period sight arrangements, not a stabilized fire-control system. Machine-gun armament could support the cavalry's intended tasks against suitable targets, but it placed clear limits on the vehicle's ability to fight more heavily protected opponents. Sources

Powertrain and running-gear changes

Petrol vehicles used Continental radial engines, with the account giving model-specific ratings rather than one certain output for every chassis. The diesel M1A1E1 used a Guiberson engine and a different power rating. The transmission provided five forward speeds and reverse. Vertical volute spring suspension supported two paired-wheel bogies on each side, with a front drive sprocket; later running-gear changes increased the length of track in contact with the ground. The source gives a higher nominal road speed for the short-chassis M1 than for the M1A1, along with different range figures. These are configuration-specific published values, not comparative trials newly verified here. Greater track contact addressed ride and handling problems but did not eliminate every mechanical limitation. Exact standard radio installations remain unestablished: the importance of communication to cavalry doctrine is not sufficient evidence to assign a particular radio set to every vehicle. Sources

Manufacture and counting boundaries

Rock Island Arsenal was the identified production center. The published preferred working breakdown is 89 accepted M1 vehicles, 17 M1A1s, and seven diesel M1A1E1s, yielding 113. It also preserves an alternative 90-vehicle M1 figure associated with a serial or prototype counting boundary. Those accounts require an acceptance and serial ledger; simply choosing the larger number would conceal the unresolved question rather than answer it. Sources

Experiments on existing chassis and subsequent redesignation did not add newly manufactured tanks. The M2 Combat Car was a separate successor. The cited industrial accounts do not provide a complete monthly cost series or a reliable comparison of complete vehicle prices. Sources

Training, service, and redesignation

The United States Cavalry was the principal user, with the account placing the vehicles in the mechanized cavalry organization and the wider effort to develop mobile armored formations. Their service value was chiefly experimental and instructional. They gave crews and commanders practical experience with tracked movement, weapons, maintenance, and organization when larger American armored formations were still being developed. Sources

The formation of the Armored Force in 1940 changed the institutional distinction behind “combat car.” Sources disagree about the exact M1, M1A1, and M1A2 redesignation mapping. Overseas or Philippine combat claims remain unconfirmed. Museum photographs establish a vehicle’s location when photographed, not its current condition or availability. Sources

Photographs and historical evidence

The strongest starting evidence combines the program's technical and production references with period photographs of named configurations. The photographs includes the T5, baseline M1, M1E2, and M1A1, plus a public-display scene. These images can explain development without pretending that every pictured vehicle is the same production pattern. The M1E2 photograph's apparent absence of installed guns is a caption qualification, not grounds for reconstructing missing weapons into the preserved file. Sources
