Its importance is greater than a simple “T-72 clone” label suggests. In the 1980s, Yugoslavia occupied a distinctive non-aligned position, purchased a Soviet design lineage, and attempted to improve it with a domestic industrial base that combined multiple republics, factories, military institutes, and export ambitions. Design and performance

The M-84 follows the classic T-72 arrangement: driver centered in the front hull, a two-person turret with commander and gunner, a mechanical carousel autoloader under the turret, and a rear engine/transmission compartment. The three-person crew reflects the autoloader-based design philosophy common to Soviet vehicles. Sources

The hull is low and compact with sharply sloped glacis armor, side skirts, and fuel/ammunition stowage influenced by the T-72 family. External differences from standard T-72 export vehicles include smoke-launcher placement, a meteorological sensor mast, and fire-control-associated external fittings on some variants. Sources

The basic turret is a low-profile, rounded cast turret inherited from the T-72 family, modified by variant. The main weapon is a 125 mm smoothbore tank gun of the Soviet 2A46 family lineage. It is automatically loaded and paired with stabilized fire-control equipment. Đuro Đaković lists 8 shells per minute for the automatic loading system. Sources

Typical secondary armament consists of a coaxial 7.62 mm PKT/M86-pattern machine gun and a 12.7 mm antiaircraft machine gun on or near the commander’s position. Serbian AS upgrades add or replace exposed commander weapons with a remotely controlled 12.7 mm station. Sources

Ammunition capacity is reported as 43 or 44 rounds depending on variant and source. The carousel holds a subset of ready rounds, with additional ammunition stowed in the hull. This arrangement enables a compact vehicle but creates a severe survivability risk if ammunition is penetrated or detonates. Sources

The most important Yugoslav improvement was the fire-control system. Official Đuro Đaković material identifies a modern automatic electrohydraulic fire-control system, and secondary sources identify the M-84A with the SUV-M-84 FCS, DNNS-2 day/night sight, ballistic inputs, and laser rangefinding. Later modernization packages add thermal sights, modern meteorological sensors, commander visualization, 360-degree awareness, and independent remote weapon control. Sources

Baseline and M-84A optics reflected the 1980s transition from active infrared / optical systems toward more capable day-night sights. Modern Serbian and Croatian packages emphasize thermal imaging, stabilized day/night sighting, commander observation, and improved driver visualization. Sources

The baseline M-84 is commonly described with a 780 hp V-46-6-type diesel, while the M-84A/M-84AB moved to approximately 735 kW / 1,000 hp. The suspension is torsion-bar based in the T-72 tradition, with six road wheels per side and rear drive. The compact, rugged layout favors low profile and cross-country performance but leaves limited internal volume for crew comfort or future system growth. Sources
