Identity and intended role
The Light Tank Mk VI was the final major development of the interwar Vickers light-tank line in British service. Its three-man arrangement and wireless facilities suited reconnaissance, liaison and cooperation with other formations. The account stresses that this was not a tank intended to exchange fire on equal terms with gun-armed medium tanks. Development and changing configurations
The transition from earlier light tanks increased the importance of a third crew member and a turret capable of accommodating the command and weapon tasks. Accounts associate the Mk VI with a revised turret and wireless provision. Changes between the lettered models involved more than names. The VIA is associated with a relocated return roller and a faceted commander's cupola. Oral-history catalog entries describe Egyptian trials, wireless and gunnery experiences, but a catalog summary is not the same as listening to the recording or consulting the contemporary test report. Protection, crew and visibility
The source describes a lightly armored, riveted vehicle. Its commonly quoted armor range is approximately 4–15 mm, which remain associated with particular surfaces and models rather than presented as a uniform protective thickness. Three crew members provided more division of labor than the earlier two-man light tanks, but did not remove the commander's burden. Cupola and roof changes affect observation and recognition, making them important for distinguishing configurations in photographs. Armament and radio equipment
The early family used a heavy.50-inch Vickers machine gun with a rifle-caliber.303-inch Vickers. The VIC replaced that pairing with a 15 mm Besa and a 7.92 mm Besa. These are separate equipment states with different mounts, ammunition and performance. Sources
The weapons could serve reconnaissance engagements against suitable targets, but machine-gun armament did not make the tank a substitute for a cannon-armed cruiser. Wireless capability was particularly important to the scouting role: an observed enemy position had operational value only if it could be communicated. The available evidence refers to No. 7 wireless equipment, but does not establish identical installations across every date and vehicle. Mobility and maintenance
Accounts associate the family with a Meadows six-cylinder petrol engine, with reported outputs around 86–88 bhp. Engine suffixes and transmission descriptions are not fully consolidated. A frequently cited road speed is about 35 mph and a road range about 125 miles. Those figures express nominal mobility, not sustained reconnaissance radius under combat conditions. Bogie suspension, track wear and retention, dust and maintenance support all affected what crews could achieve. Trial and oral-history leads suggest that changes were tested in demanding conditions, including Egypt. Those leads are valuable for later research but are not being presented as fully consulted test evidence. Production and operator accounting
A published total of approximately 1,682 vehicles combines groups of 51, 210, 914, 173, and 334. Although those figures add to the stated total, the allocation of the 173-vehicle group remains uncertain. Specialized conversions further complicate comparisons between published breakdowns. Sources
British front-line use is placed chiefly between 1936 and 1942, with training or secondary use continuing beyond the main combat period. The cited accounts do not firmly establish Australian acquisition and training history, other national users and captured vehicles. An IWM object-record lead is relevant to the reported Australian VIA connection, but that record's full contents have not been assumed available. Service, limitations and interpretation
The source account of losses at Buq Buq illustrates the danger of using lightly protected scouts against stronger opposition. Exact loss rates and circumstances remain uncertain. A memorable incident does not establish a universal mechanical or tactical verdict. Sources
The image set also documents a tank on the Oosthaven wharf during the February 1942 evacuation period and Australian cavalry maneuvers in Syria. These photographs provide dated contexts without proving every equipment change or a complete unit strength. The Mk VI's historical significance rests on the relationship between scouting doctrine, communications and battlefield demands.
