Six prototypes behind an agricultural name

Grosstraktor was a concealment name for a German experimental tank program, not an agricultural vehicle intended for ordinary farm work. Accounts describe six prototypes built in pairs by Daimler-Benz, Krupp and Rheinmetall. Their purpose was development and testing under the restrictions surrounding German rearmament, not the creation of a fielded production regiment. Sources

The program is best understood through those manufacturers. Modern I, II and III labels are applied inconsistently across secondary accounts. That approach preserves the differences without pretending that a convenient numbering convention resolves all identification problems. Sources

Leichttraktor and Neubaufahrzeug belong to connected but separate programs. Soviet multi-turret tanks can be compared with the Grosstraktor experiments where evidence warrants it, but they are not additional members of the six-vehicle prototype fleet. Requirements, secrecy and construction

The account connects the program with the restrictions of Article 171 of the Versailles settlement and with German-Soviet military cooperation. Its chronology begins with an A.W.20 requirement in 1925, a cooperation agreement in 1926 and contracts in 1927. These represent different stages in a secret development effort and cannot be compressed into a claim that completed tanks already existed when the initial requirement was written. Sources

The requirement called for a vehicle of about sixteen tons, a crew of six, a 75 mm weapon and machine guns, road speed around 40 km/h and an ability to cross water. Dimensions and range targets likewise appear in the source. They are design objectives, not test results for all three manufacturers. The manufacturers delivered experimental machines rather than combat-ready armored fleets. Accounts record completion and movement to Soviet territory in 1929, with trials at Kama near Kazan. It distinguishes the heavy Grosstraktor vehicles from smaller experimental tanks that were also part of the broader cooperation. Their shared secrecy did not make them technically interchangeable. Common layout and important differences

The prototypes combined a central main turret, machine-gun positions, a rear engine and arrangements intended to provide buoyancy. Their hulls were experimental constructions, commonly described in the cited sources as mild steel. These vehicles were intended to teach designers how a tank worked, including where its design failed. Sources

The principal gun was a short 75 mm weapon, with machine guns assigned to turret, hull or rear positions according to the description. Armament counts vary, and some equipment was not necessarily fitted in every photographed or tested state. A 37 mm reference associated with the smaller Leichttraktor program cannot be allowed to migrate into the Grosstraktor's generic main-armament field. Sources

Crew arrangement, optics, ammunition capacity and radio installation are incompletely documented. A radio requirement does not establish an operational radio set in every prototype. The working specifications retain unknown fields and medium- or uncertain descriptions instead of filling them from later German tanks. Daimler-Benz is associated with the Mercedes D.IVb engine, commonly rated around 260 hp, while BMW Va engines around 250 hp appear in the other manufacturers' accounts. Transmission and suspension arrangements differed and changed during development. A single family speed or power-to-weight figure would conceal those distinctions. Kama trials and the limits of amphibious ambition

Trials began in 1929 and exposed problems that a requirement sheet could not resolve. The account reports a fatal flotation accident involving Rheinmetall employee Kerres on 30 October 1929, after which water trials stopped. Accounts place the end of Kama and return of the vehicles to Germany in 1933. It connects subsequent use with training, demonstration and later static roles. Their ultimate fates are not equally well documented. A report of disposal, a photograph of a training target and a claim that no intact example survives cannot be merged into six exact destruction histories without further records. Sources

No combat service is confirmed in the cited account, and direct inheritance by particular later tanks is not conclusively established. The Grosstraktor’s importance was chiefly industrial and institutional: its small experimental fleet gave German organizations experience in design, trials, and training. Sources

The problem with the single supplied photograph

The references contain just one embedded image, a late-war training scene in which men use an anti-tank weapon against a distant target. It is not a contemporary close view of a Grosstraktor undergoing development trials. The specific identification of the background vehicle and the link between the archival wording and later descriptive labels are uncertain before it can represent the program publicly. Sources

The image is retained as evidence, but not selected as the article's representative vehicle photograph. The most useful additions would be securely identified views of each manufacturer's prototype, dated trial photographs and technical drawings with a traceable source. Until those are available, a clearly explained image gap is preferable to turning an uncertain background target into an authoritative identification. Sources
