Historical overview

The FV4004 Conway was not a production tank family in the ordinary sense. It was a highly focused British prototype program intended to place a 120 mm anti-tank gun on an available Centurion hull quickly enough to bridge the perceived gap before FV214 Conqueror could reach service. Its immediate motive was early Cold War anxiety over Soviet heavy armor, especially the IS-3, and the resulting belief that British 17-pdr and even 20-pdr Centurions might be outranged or outmatched by the heaviest Soviet tanks. Conway was a rational but awkward stopgap. As a battlefield tank it would have been specialized, conspicuous, ammunition-limited, and demanding to maintain, yet it promised exactly what the Royal Armoured Corps feared it might need in West Germany: a 120 mm gun available before Conqueror. FV4004 belongs to the brief but intense early Cold War period when British armored policy was still digesting late-Second World War lessons while anticipating a possible armored war in Germany. It was closer to a heavy-gun overwatch vehicle: a small proportion of heavy guns in armored regiments, covering 20-pdr Centurions and engaging enemy heavy tanks or strongpoints from longer distances. This makes the "tank destroyer" label understandable, but the British project language also fits the local term "heavy gun tank," meaning a tank defined by gun power rather than by heavy-tank weight class. Industrial constraints were central. A purpose-built heavy tank was already underway in the FV200/FV214 line, but it was not ready. A stopgap vehicle had to avoid disrupting Centurion 20-pdr production and avoid slowing Conqueror. A major source of confusion is the word "prototype." The project appears to have used several Centurion hulls or mock-up/test vehicles: a mounting-test vehicle reported as hull 03ZR06, a weighted suspension-test hull reported as 03ZR01, and the firing prototype/surviving vehicle associated with registration 07 BA 67. The design problem was straightforward to state but hard to package: the 120 mm gun needed recoil room, the Centurion turret ring cannot be enlarged, and the turret cannot require a casting path that interfered with standard Centurion production. Design and performance

FV4004 used a conventional Centurion layout: driver in the front hull, fighting compartment in the center, engine and transmission at the rear. The transformation was concentrated above the turret ring, where the original Centurion turret was replaced by a large angular turret carrying the 120 mm gun high enough to manage recoil without major hull redesign. The hull was essentially that of a Centurion Mk 3. This preserved the basic glacis, driver position, engine bay, Horstmann suspension, tracks, and rear-drive layout. The principal changes concerned ammunition stowage and fittings for the gun/turret system, including a travel lock or gun crutch for long movement with the turret traversed rearward. The Conway turret was tall, angular, and purpose-built. Its high gun position allowed the 120 mm breech and recoil system to work above the turret ring and into the rear bustle. It had a large rear door that could serve crew access, cartridge-case ejection, and gun-removal purposes. A coaxial.30 cal / 7.62 mm Browning M1919A4 in British L3A1 service designation is normally listed as the secondary weapon. It was a conventional ranging/suppression and close-defense adjunct, not a solution to the vehicle's close-range vulnerability. [S1, S4] Sources

The detailed secondary account lists APDS and HESH as the two principal 120 mm ammunition types. It gives a total carried load of 20 two-piece rounds, with 11 ready rounds in the turret and the remainder near the driver. The gun was not a modern stabilized fire-on-the-move system. The main secondary account reports partial stabilization in elevation for gun holding but not fire control, likely a carry or safety mode rather than a firing stabilizer. Road speed is usually given at about 30 km/h / 19 mph, somewhat below the Tank Museum's standard Centurion Mk 3 speed figure of 21.5 mph. The long barrel required a rearward travel position and a gun crutch for longer movements. Tactical mobility would probably have been acceptable for overwatch with Centurion units but not generous. Production, operators, and combat record

The production story is mostly a story of intended production that never happened. The main detailed secondary account reports that production was expected to begin in early 1952 with a planned first tranche ready by April 1953, intended for BAOR armored formations. Industrial logic drove the design. A new hull or enlarged turret ring would have increased disruption and delay. A rolled/welded or plate-built turret path, standard Centurion hull, and minimal hull changes promised a faster emergency output. The PreservedTanks profile records final assembly at Royal Ordnance Factory Barnbow, Crossgates, Leeds, around 1951. The main secondary account identifies Royal Arsenal Woolwich as the source of two 120 mm guns for the program. Auster Aircraft Limited is credited there with turret design. Known bottlenecks included packaging the 120 mm gun, controlling recoil and balance, preserving the Centurion production line, not diverting resources from Conqueror, and the limited suspension margins of a 50-ton Centurion-based vehicle. FV4004 had no operational export users and no combat service. Its "operators" are better described as British development, trial, and preservation custodians. Legacy and historical evidence

Conway is best compared not to a single enemy tank but to the problem set it tried to solve: British Centurion firepower before the 105 mm era, Western 120 mm heavy gun projects, Soviet heavy tanks, and related emergency British up-gun vehicles. Sources

FV4004 had little direct design lineage because it did not enter production, but it is historically important as evidence of British heavy-gun thinking before Conqueror and Chieftain.
