Overview and purpose
The FCM 36 was a French light infantry tank whose welded, sloping armor and diesel engine distinguished it from several contemporary French designs. Accounts place it within the effort to replace the Renault FT, not within the cavalry reconnaissance or cruiser categories. Its relatively modern construction did not remove the limitations of a two-man crew, a small turret and a short 37 mm gun. Sources

Development and procurement
The requirement for a replacement light infantry tank emerged in 1933. FCM's shipbuilding background is relevant to the company's use of welding and sloped plate, but industrial expertise alone did not guarantee inexpensive mass production. Accounts describe a mock-up in 1934, a prototype presented in April 1935 and formal acceptance in June 1936, with production deliveries following later. Price and manufacturing capacity constrained the program. A trial with the longer SA 38 gun reportedly exposed turret-strength difficulties. Hull, turret and crew
The production tank had a driver and a commander who also operated the turret weapon. Its welded, angular hull and turret contrasted visually with the cast components used on other French light tanks. Sloping surfaces improved the geometry of protection, but the published maximum armor value of about 40 mm cannot be generalized to every face, roof plate or opening. Sources
The one-man turret imposed multiple simultaneous tasks on the commander: observation, target selection, loading, aiming and coordination. The small crew therefore matters as much to the technical description as the gun caliber. Reports of a gas-resistant or sealed construction remain qualified and cannot be inflated into a modern collective-protection system. Museum interior photographs are useful for showing surviving structure and equipment, but later batteries, finishes or incomplete installations cannot automatically establish the full 1940 fighting configuration. Weapons and observation
The standard gun was the short 37 mm SA 18, accompanied by a 7.5 mm machine gun of the MAC 31 family. This arrangement reflected the infantry-support mission but provided limited anti-tank performance against stronger opposition. It does not establish a reliable ammunition-type breakdown for every unit and date. Sources
The long-gun experiment is distinct from this baseline. A drawing, trial report or later conversion cannot be used to assign SA 38 performance to the hundred production tanks. Likewise, the account does not provide a complete, independently checked inventory of sights and optical fittings. Manual turret operation, visibility and commander workload can be discussed from the available evidence, while exact sight models and detailed firing procedures remain further-documentation tasks. Diesel power and mobility
A Berliet diesel engine is central to the FCM 36's design history. Published accounts give a discrepancy between a museum figure of 91 CV and secondary statements around 105 cv or horsepower. The available evidence gives a five-forward-speed transmission, road speed around 24 km/h and a commonly cited range of about 225 km. These describe the source's specification envelope, not guaranteed combat endurance. Track tunnels and the evacuation of mud are identified as practical concerns. The diesel installation could offer advantages in endurance or fuel behavior while also imposing fuel-supply, maintenance and cold-weather demands. The hundred-tank delivery series is placed between May 1938 and March 1939, with numbers 30001–30100 given in the cited sources. French service centers on the 4e and 7e bataillons de chars de combat. A vehicle's allocation, loss, recovery and later museum identity are separate events; the preserved example numbered 30070 is treated through that individual-history framework. Sources
Captured stocks and German self-propelled conversions introduce several different counting problems. A recorded captured inventory of 37 in October 1940 and a broader figure around 50 need not describe the same place, date or condition. Conversion figures also vary by weapon and program. Published figures do not turn every German designation into a newly manufactured French tank, nor combine the PaK 40 and howitzer conversions into a single asserted total. Combat service and legacy
The combat account covers the Sedan area, Chémery, Bulson and Stonne, with the 7e BCC's losses requiring detailed unit-return verification. The story of tank 30070 includes action near Voncq on 9 June 1940, retreat, mechanical failure and abandonment. Such a specimen narrative can connect design to experience, but cannot stand in for a complete history of both FCM-equipped battalions. Sources
Published accounts describe reports of vehicles surviving multiple hits. These remain incidents with particular ammunition, angles and conditions, not proof of invulnerability. The FCM 36 illustrates the coexistence of advanced construction features and operational limitations: welded sloped protection and diesel power alongside restricted turret labor, weak anti-tank armament and a small production run. Its later converted chassis require their own German service histories.
