FCM 1A

The FCM 1A was a French heavy-tank prototype developed by Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée during the First World War.

A prototype rather than a service fleet

The FCM 1A was a French heavy-tank prototype developed by Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée during the First World War. Its large turret, long tracked chassis and substantial proposed firepower addressed the problem of crossing obstacles and attacking fortified positions. Accounts record one completed prototype, not an operational tank unit or a production series. Sources

Its historical position is between the earlier French assault-tank experience and the later Char 2C program. That connection cannot erase its separate identity. A wooden model, an experimental vehicle and a projected successor are different kinds of evidence. Sources

Development and the sequence of trials

The account traces a development decision to October 1916 and a full-size wooden model to March 1917. The model offered a way to examine the proposed arrangement before completing the powered vehicle. Its photographs are therefore important, but they do not show a tank that had already demonstrated its performance. Some archival descriptions use broader FCM or Char 2C wording, making object-level identification essential. Sources

The completed prototype was tested at La Seyne-sur-Mer in December 1917. The accounts record several dates: an early demonstration or test around 10 December, other accounts around the twentieth, and official trials on 21–22 December. The trial accounts emphasize obstacle crossing and an ability to traverse difficult ground without the track failures that had troubled some earlier experiments. They also report awkward turning. The long chassis could help bridge a ditch while making maneuver more demanding. Those observations remain test findings, not be rewritten as evidence of battlefield success. Further gun testing and proposed changes followed, but they did not turn the vehicle into a combat formation. Sources

Layout and protection

The prototype placed the driver and a hull machine-gun position toward the front, a principal turret above the fighting compartment, and the engine installation at the rear. A long running gear supported the large hull. The arrangement offered more protected fighting space than very small tanks, at the cost of substantial size and mechanical demands. Sources

Dimensions need unusually careful labeling. Published accounts describe a length around 8.35 metres and a width around 2.84 metres. A height of about 1.98 metres refers to the hull in some accounts, while overall height is closer to three metres. These values are not competing measurements of the same dimension and cannot be averaged or silently substituted for one another. Sources

Armor figures are described by zone: approximately 35 mm at the most protected front and turret positions, around 20–21 mm on sides and rear, and thinner roof and floor plates. The reported figures records the claims and their certainty. Those proposed or reported thicknesses are not, by themselves, ballistic proof that the tank could defeat every threat it was intended to face. Sources

Armament and its proposed changes

The initial gun associated with the prototype was a short 105 mm Schneider weapon. The accounts distinguish that arrangement from later proposals for a 75 mm gun and from less firmly established references to other armament. A planned replacement is not established as a photographed or tested installation unless the relevant evidence is available. Sources

Ammunition figures vary with both the source and the weapon under discussion. Accounts record approximately 100–120 or 122 rounds for the 105 mm arrangement and larger projected quantities for a 75 mm fit. Those are not interchangeable descriptions of one standard stowage plan. Machine guns are discussed as hull and turret equipment, with additional ports requiring separate interpretation. Sources

The prototype’s turret and sights is reported from its own documentation. Later Char 2C fire-control, crew and weapon details cannot fill missing FCM 1A information automatically. Unknown fittings remain unknown until a drawing, report or clearly identified photograph establishes them. Sources

Engine, transmission and mobility

A Renault petrol engine supplied the prototype’s power. The available evidence quotes both 200 CV and 220 horsepower in different accounts. Accounts describe mechanical transmission, while electrical arrangements in related follow-on proposals are not established to have been installed in this vehicle. Sources

The long tracks and associated suspension were intended to distribute weight and cross substantial obstacles. Reported speeds include approximately six kilometres per hour in one context and up to ten in another. The distinction between achieved performance, favorable-ground speed and a claimed maximum still matters. Engine power alone does not establish road range or endurance, which remain uncertain. Crew accounts commonly give seven, with a later six-man arrangement discussed in the available evidence. This may reflect proposed changes, but it remain uncertain. The engine and crew layout also raise questions about access, visibility, ventilation and maintenance. The account supports describing those design issues; it does not supply a combat-based reliability rate, a mature maintenance system or an operational service record. Sources

Production decisions and subsequent fate

One prototype was built. Proposed quantities did not become completed vehicles. The published cost figure is likewise a source claim requiring its original accounting context rather than a fully verified unit price for serial manufacture. Sources

The trials helped expose the choices facing a heavy-tank program: protection and obstacle-crossing capacity could be increased, but turning, mechanical integration, production and support remained problems. The FCM 1A was not simply an unsuccessful Char 2C with a different name, nor did it become a standard service tank. Its significance belongs to development, testing and the assessment of alternatives. Sources

Later accounts place the prototype in storage, including a reported Versailles association and claims extending into 1940. The ultimate fate is not firmly resolved in the source package. Sources

What the images can establish

The gallery contains a wooden-model photograph and two views of the physical prototype. Their most useful contribution is configuration evidence: the distinction between the mock-up and completed vehicle, the side layout of the running gear and gun installation, and the rear machinery arrangement. A model photograph cannot demonstrate powered mobility; a trial photograph cannot establish the complete performance of the program. Sources
