The EMBT / MGCS demonstrator family is a Franco-German technology path developed around KNDS, the group formed from Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France’s Nexter.

2015–2018: KNDS and the first “Leo‑Clerc.” KNDS states that it resulted from the association of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter. At Eurosatory 2018, the companies showed a hybrid main battle tank using a Leopard 2 chassis and a Leclerc turret. EDR Magazine characterized it as a pure engineering exercise, not a product-ready tank, and noted that its purpose was to demonstrate cooperation and collect feedback. 2022: Enhanced Main Battle Tank. At Eurosatory 2022, KNDS presented the Enhanced Main Battle Tank. EDR’s technical interview described a 60–62 tonne design target, a modified Leopard-derived chassis, an MTU 883/Renk 295 TM EuroPowerPack, two crew positions in the hull, a new turret with 120 mm armament, a top-mounted ARX 30 30×113 mm weapon station, 23 cameras, and a systems-operator concept. March–April 2024: political reset. Reuters reported a Franco-German breakthrough in March 2024 over task distribution. On 26 April 2024, the German and French defence ministers signed an MoU setting industrial responsibilities, 50/50 cost participation, German leadership, and eight programme pillars. June 2024: EMBT ADT 140 and companion demonstrators. At Eurosatory 2024, KNDS displayed EMBT with ADT 140, a remotely operated turret carrying the 140 mm ASCALON gun. KNDS also showcased Leopard 2 A‑RC 3.0 and Leclerc Evolution as intermediate modular solutions; both were presented as steps toward MBT demonstrators preparing for MGCS. Breaking Defense reported that the 2024 EMBT technology demonstrator used an upgraded Leopard chassis with a shortened engine, an uncrewed EMBT‑ADT 140 turret, ARX30 RCWS, Prometheus active protection, and an AI-enabled “SAFE” fire-control/weapon-queuing system. Rheinmetall announced in January 2025 that KNDS Deutschland, KNDS France, Rheinmetall Landsysteme, and Thales had signed the shareholder agreement for MGCS Project Company GmbH in Cologne, with equal 25 percent ownership and a national workshare of 50 percent Germany / 50 percent France. 2026: propulsion development and schedule tension. Rolls-Royce announced in March 2026 that BAAINBw had commissioned Rolls-Royce Power Systems to develop the MGCS drive system with ZF, built around a hybrid powerpack exceeding 1,400 kW and a new mtu 10V 199 engine. In April 2026, Defense News reported remarks by French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin that France was discussing an interim Leclerc replacement because MGCS was about a decade behind schedule. Design and performance

The 2018 EMBT used a conventional MBT layout: driver in the hull, turreted main armament, rear engine compartment, and tracked chassis. The 2022 Enhanced MBT retained the conventional armored-vehicle layout but redistributed internal volume, adding a systems-operator position in the hull and moving the turret ring slightly rearward after adopting a more compact powerpack. The 2024 ADT 140 configuration shifts the trend toward remotely operated or unmanned turrets, while MGCS itself is not a single layout but a future multi-platform architecture. The family’s hull lineage is Leopard-derived. The 2018 demonstrator combined a Leopard 2 hull with a Leclerc turret. The 2022 vehicle used a modified Leopard 2 hull with a compact EuroPowerPack and two front-hull crew positions. The 2022 turret was described by EDR as wholly new while preserving elements of the Leclerc concept; it lowered crew seating and was designed with future weapons in mind. The 2022 demonstrator reportedly used the latest Leopard 2 chassis armor package and a turret concept derived from Leclerc thinking, but EDR emphasized that protection packages would normally be customer-specific. The 2018 and 2022 demonstrators centered on 120 mm armament, including the Leclerc’s 120 mm CN120-26 in the available accounts and trade-source descriptions. KNDS’s 2024 ADT 140 demonstrator carries a 140 mm ASCALON gun and is explicitly intended to show high-end future firepower and 120/140 mm caliber-switching potential. KNDS states that Leclerc Evolution includes ARX 30 and a loitering-munition launcher; Leopard 2 A‑RC 3.0 includes a 30 mm secondary weapon and antitank missiles.
