Cruiser Tank Mk II / A10

The A10, standardized as the Cruiser Tank Mk II, developed from the A9 but exchanged its two small forward machine-gun turrets for a more conventional protected hull front and thicker armor.

Overview and identity

The A10, standardized as the Cruiser Tank Mk II, developed from the A9 but exchanged its two small forward machine-gun turrets for a more conventional protected hull front and thicker armor. The result illustrates the difficulty of obtaining substantially greater protection from an existing automotive arrangement without losing mobility. Although an infantry-support requirement shaped its early development, the vehicle entered the cruiser category rather than becoming the eventual standard infantry tank. Sources

The accounts distinguish the ordinary gun tank, revised machine-gun arrangements commonly represented by Mk IA or Cruiser IIA terminology, and the close-support vehicle. Prototype labels and production labels are not interchangeable. Its frequently quoted total of 175 also coexists with a 170-vehicle contract figure. Those numbers need definitions for pilots, close-support vehicles and delivered production before they can be reconciled. Sources

From the A9 to the A10

The A9 supplied a starting point when British designers considered a more heavily protected tank. Removing the auxiliary turrets simplified the forward fighting arrangement, while thicker plates increased weight. The A10E1 prototype, associated in the cited sources with T1479 and registration BMM 835, appeared in 1937. Its increased protection remained short of the heavier infantry-tank requirement subsequently pursued through the A12. Sources

The development history therefore cannot be reduced to a failed attempt to build a Matilda. The A10 became a production cruiser in its own right, while experimentation with a further Vickers design contributed to the path toward Valentine. That relationship is important, but does not make later Valentine production part of the A10 ledger. Crew, hull and fighting arrangement

The standard arrangement placed a driver and forward machine gunner in the hull, with a commander, gunner and loader in the main turret. The principal working description is thus a five-man vehicle, not a claim that every caption or published summary agrees. Sources

The riveted hull used supplementary protection to reach a maximum of about 30 mm, with thinner surfaces elsewhere. Its compact turret and forward compartment still imposed restrictions on movement, visibility and maintenance access. Deleting two small turrets did not remove every ergonomic compromise inherited from the earlier design. Sources

Gun tanks and close support

The normal tank carried a 2-pounder gun, approximately 40 mm in caliber, with machine guns in the turret and hull. The available evidence distinguishes early Vickers equipment from Besa installations, but exact changes to individual mounts and production batches remain manual-level questions. The commonly listed 100 main-gun rounds are a representative stowage figure, not an inventory verified for every operational vehicle. Sources

The close-support A10 substituted a 3.7-inch howitzer. Its role and ammunition cannot be copied from the A12 Matilda close-support tank, which used a different weapon. Smoke and high-explosive allocations require their own dated instructions. Sources

Automotive characteristics

An AEC A179 petrol engine of about 150 hp powered the production design. The suspension remained a bogie system, not the Christie arrangement associated with later cruiser families. Additional armor and a working weight around 14 tonnes left the A10 slower than the A9. Source speed and range figures are retained with their units and qualifications instead of being combined into a supposed universal performance envelope. Sources

Accounts describe a road maximum near 16 mph, with poorer cross-country performance. Such values say little by themselves about a unit's sustained march rate. Cooling, tracks, suspension wear, spares and the recovery situation all affected operational availability. Contemporary maintenance photographs are therefore useful evidence of service conditions, but a damaged vehicle in one scene cannot establish an entire theater's mechanical-loss percentage. Sources

Manufacture and deployment

Manufacturing accounts involve Vickers and several additional industrial firms, with their precise allocations and subcontracting roles still under review. Close-support versions and prototypes fall within particular production accounts rather than automatically adding to every quoted total. Sources

The service narrative includes France in 1940, the Middle East and North Africa, and Greece in 1941. These settings imposed different demands and do not support one undifferentiated reliability verdict. Photographs of abandoned tanks in Greece demonstrate the recorded scene, but do not prove a standing German operational fleet. Claims of French emergency use likewise remain qualified until identifiable vehicles or unit records establish what actually happened. Sources

Assessment and surviving evidence

The A10 shows a practical but limited attempt to trade speed for protection using an existing design base. Its gun could be useful against early armor, while its protection and automotive limitations narrowed the situations in which crews could exploit that weapon. Neither the cruiser designation nor the earlier infantry requirement explains every battlefield result. Sources

The preserved close-support tank, T9261, offers a valuable visual reference for hull form and weapon arrangement. Its own history and restoration is separate from a generic combat biography. For the encyclopedia, the strongest structure is a shared development article linked to clearly defined configurations, with surviving objects, period photographs and manual references assigned to the versions they actually document.
