A changing competition, not one production tank

Requirements and development pressure
The requirement changed in 1936 and again in 1938. A hull-mounted 75 mm concept competed with increasingly strong preference for a turret-mounted gun. Weight allowances rose as protection and armament grew. The later specification contemplated a 75 mm weapon of 32 calibers, substantial ammunition capacity, radio and gas protection, and improved observation and fire-control arrangements. Sources

SEAM and the incomplete G1P
SEAM, associated with André Poniatowski's design work, produced the program's best-documented physical demonstrator. Accounts describe an incomplete vehicle delivered for examination in December 1936, without its intended complete armament installation and with a weaker engine than planned. The available evidence gives a 120 hp Hispano engine in place of a planned 280 hp powerplant and reports unsatisfactory mobility in that early state. Proposed changes to hull length, suspension, and fighting space followed. Subsequent projected improvements are not evidence that the demonstrated vehicle achieved the later requirement. Renault and the other design branches
Renault's G1R, also associated in the available evidence with ACK1 nomenclature, explored a different solution. Rounded hull forms, proposed running-gear arrangements, and a turret-mounted 75 mm gun gave the project a distinct design identity. The vehicle is described as advanced design and model work, not a completed armed production prototype. BDR's G1B developed through a wooden mock-up and grew beyond early weight expectations when the proposed turret and equipment were considered. Lorraine's G1L similarly accumulated weight and changed powerplant proposals. Fouga's G1F is more sparsely documented and includes running-gear and transmission questions. Comparing like with like

Early SOMUA and FCM submissions belong to the competition's history, but their status and nomenclature remain uncertain. Historical value without a counterfactual guarantee
The G1 requirements explored ways to combine infantry support, anti-tank firepower, stronger protection, and improved command arrangements. That ambition distinguishes it from simply repeating an existing light-tank design. The account rejects the assumption that the unrealized tank would automatically have changed the campaign.
