Burstyn Motorgeschütz

The Burstyn Motorgeschütz was an Austro-Hungarian proposal for an armored, tracked, gun-armed cross-country vehicle.

Overview

The Burstyn Motorgeschütz was an Austro-Hungarian proposal for an armored, tracked, gun-armed cross-country vehicle. Developed before the First World War, it combined a compact protected body, a rotating gun mount, and an auxiliary obstacle-crossing mechanism. It remainsed a proposal and scale-model concept: no full-size self-propelled prototype, production vehicle, or service tank resulted. 1, 2, 3, 5

Its historical importance therefore rests on the ideas it brought together rather than battlefield performance. Describing it simply as the first tank obscures the difference between anticipating a vehicle configuration and demonstrating a working weapon system. 1, 2, 3, 5

Development and the obstacle-crossing patent

The proposal is associated with the officer-engineer Gunther Burstyn. The references identify Austrian patent AT53248B as a particularly important piece of evidence: it records a filing date of 1 March 1911 and a publication date of 25 April 1912. The invention concerned an obstacle-crossing device for motor vehicles, including armored vehicles carrying guns. 1, 2, 3, 5

That distinction matters. The patent describes adjustable support rails and small wheels intended to help a vehicle cross ditches, steps, and embankments. It does not establish that every part of a complete tank had been designed, manufactured, and tested. Much of the familiar description of the proposed hull, propulsion system, and armament comes instead from models and later reconstruction. 1, 2, 3, 5

Accounts describe Austro-Hungarian and German consideration of the project without funding for a full-size demonstration. It treats the detailed administrative sequence as a subject requiring further archival confirmation. There was no production decision and consequently no established sequence of production-standard modifications. 1, 2, 3, 5

Proposed design

The usual reconstruction shows a relatively small armored body above tracks, a gun in a rotating mount, and separate obstacle-crossing arms. The arms are the best-documented part of the concept. The complete suspension arrangement, power train, and internal working spaces are much less certain. 1, 5

A small quick-firing cannon of approximately 30–40 mm is proposed in the source material. An exact weapon model, ammunition capacity, and final gun-mount arrangement have not been established. Machine guns appear in some reconstructions, but their number and placement is not confirmed equipment. 1, 5

Descriptions commonly give a petrol engine in the 40–60 hp range and a crew of three. These remain reconstructed intentions, not specifications measured on an operating vehicle. No definite transmission model, fuel capacity, sight, or radio installation is documented. Engineering observations about cramped working spaces or maintenance difficulty remain interpretations, not reported crew experience. 1, 5

Specifications and their limits

Published numerical descriptions are especially easy to overstate. Figures such as roughly seven tonnes, a length near 3.5 metres, and light armor refer to a proposed or reconstructed design. There are no full-size trial results against which to check them. A projected road speed cannot be presented as an achieved maximum speed, and unknown range or ammunition capacity remains unknown. Production, evaluation, and service

There was no production program or operational deployment. The Austro-Hungarian evaluation record is not evidence of an army operating a tank, and consideration by German authorities is not export service. The project has no recorded tank-crew service or combat performance. 3, 5

Discussion of what the design might have achieved is counterfactual. A successful obstacle-crossing mechanism alone would not demonstrate that the complete vehicle could be driven, supplied, repaired, protected, and employed effectively in combat. 3, 5

Legacy and surviving visual evidence

The Motorgeschütz is useful as a precursor in the history of armored vehicles: it shows that important elements of the later tank were being considered before the wartime programs that produced operational machines. Anticipation, however, is not the same as direct influence. The available evidence does not establish a documentary chain showing that British or French tank development depended on Burstyn's proposal. 2

The visual record used here consists of patent imagery, a historical scale model, and later museum display models or replicas. These reconstructions illustrate the concept; none is an original full-size 1911 service tank. That distinction is part of the history, not merely a qualification attached to the gallery. 2
