The AMX-30E was the Spanish license-production branch of the French AMX-30 main battle tank family.

Historical overview

The AMX-30E was the Spanish license-production branch of the French AMX-30 main battle tank family. It is best understood as a Spanish AMX-30B derivative rather than a clean-sheet Spanish tank. The Spanish Army’s own summary describes the AMX-30 as a French 1960s design that emerged after the breakup of the Franco-German common-tank effort, then states that Spain built a licensed version called AMX-30 E with several national changes. The tank mattered for three linked reasons. First, it gave the Spanish Army a modern 105 mm-gun main battle tank at a time when the force still relied heavily on older U.S.-origin M47 and M48 tanks. Second, the program expanded Spanish armored-vehicle industrial capacity through Empresa Nacional Santa Bárbara, the Las Canteras assembly site near Seville, ENASA engine production in Barcelona, and a distributed Spanish component base. The AMX-30E gave Spain useful mobility, a competent low-profile turret, a 105 mm main gun, and a national production base, but it carried the AMX-30 family’s central weakness: limited armor protection and persistent automotive reliability problems. The total of 299 is well supported as 19 French-supplied tanks plus 280 Spanish-built tanks, but modernization counts vary: an official MUMA sheet says 210 of 299 were modified, while common secondary accounts often imply split counts that cover the entire fleet. The AMX-30E sits at the intersection of French postwar tank design and Spain’s late-Cold War effort to modernize an armored force still built around older U.S. equipment. French AMX-30 development followed the collapse of the Franco-German common-tank project. For Spain, the immediate problem was obsolescence. The official Spanish Army AMX-30E history says that in 1966 the Spanish Army began studying a replacement for the antiquated M47 and proposed the German Leopard. That matches the external-source situation: the existence of EM1/EM2 is solid, but exact conversion counts and sub-variant boundaries require deeper Spanish archival or Jane’s/ARMOR follow-up. Sources

The design origin is French. The AMX-30 parent family emerged from the postwar common-tank effort and entered French service as the AMX-30B in the late 1960s. Chars-francais notes that the French AMX-30B production standard used the HS 110 diesel, CN-105 F1 105 mm gun, TOP 7 cupola, and a secondary armament arrangement that initially included a 12.7 mm coaxial weapon and later a 20 mm cannon. Spanish development began as an adoption and localization process. The official Spanish Army AMX-30E paper says Spain studied a replacement in 1966, selected the AMX-30 after political and international constraints undermined the Leopard option, and signed a 1970 agreement under which France would deliver 19 tanks and Spain would receive a license to manufacture 180 more. The Spanish Army source states that the gun and tracks were built at the Fábrica de Armas de Sevilla, the engine at ENASA in Barcelona, components across Spain, and final assembly at the Fábrica de Artillería facilities in Las Canteras, Seville. The first direct French vehicles had an urgent-service purpose. One remained in the Peninsula at the Cavalry Application School; the remainder went to the Sahara, where the Legion tank company “Bakali” was formed inside the Tercio Don Juan de Austria. The AMX-30E retained the AMX-30’s classic layout: driver front left, fuel and ammunition storage to the driver’s right, fighting compartment and low turret at the center, and rear engine compartment separated by a firewall. The hull used rolled steel plates and cast steel pieces. It was light for its generation: the Spanish Army source gives 34 metric tons in marching order and 36 metric tons in combat, reinforcing the AMX-30 family’s mobility-first concept. Sources

The turret was a low one-piece cast armor turret. The gunner and commander sat on the right, the loader on the left. Spanish sources repeatedly treat the turret as one of the vehicle’s strengths even while criticizing the automotive system. Sources

The official technical sheet in the longer Spanish Army PDF gives armor thickness as between 110 and 12 mm; the one-page MUMA sheet summarizes armor as steel from 20 to 80 mm. Published accounts describe the 110-12 mm figure as the more detailed vehicle specification while flagging the one-page museum-sheet difference as a source conflict. Sources

The AMX-30E used the DEFA F1 / CN-105-F1 105 mm, 56-caliber semiautomatic gun with a vertical wedge breech and thermal sleeve. The Spanish Army source gives 360-degree traverse in 15 seconds and elevation from -8 to +20 degrees. The same source notes that although the chamber was standardized like many Western tank guns, ammunition cannot be freely interchanged because the gun and ammunition system differed. Sources

The Spanish AMX-30E differed from the French AMX-30B by replacing the French 20 mm parallel cannon with a 12.7 mm Browning machine gun. The longer official Spanish source lists a Browning M-3.50 caliber coaxial weapon with 750 rounds and a 7.62 mm MG-1 in the TOP-7 commander’s cupola with 2,050 rounds. MUMA’s one-page description instead identifies a coaxial MG-42 and another 7.62 mm weapon, leaving a discrepancy in the secondary-armament descriptions. Sources

The longer Spanish Army source lists 50 main-gun rounds: 4 vertical rounds in the turret, 18 horizontal rounds in the turret rear, and 28 horizontal rounds next to the driver. It names hollow-charge stabilized ammunition and high-explosive ammunition, with effective ranges of 3,000 m and 3,500 m respectively. Sources

Baseline fire control included the M-208 coincidence rangefinder with a 2 m base and 12x magnification, M-271 gunner sight, M-282 rotating periscope for loader and gunner, and TOP-7 commander’s cupola with ten fixed periscopes and a 10x sight. The AMX-30E had night vision by image intensifier for the driver and an IR projector for firing. The Spanish version explicitly replaced the French driver IR night-vision arrangement with an image intensifier. Sources

The engine was the Hispano-Suiza HS 110 manufactured by ENASA, a 12-cylinder opposed multifuel diesel-cycle engine, water-cooled and turbocharged. The longer Spanish Army source gives 720 CV / 530 kW at 2,600 rpm, while the MUMA sheet gives 680 CV. Transmission was a manual five-speed mechanism with inverter and an electrokinetic Gravina automatic clutch. Sources

The running gear used a Vickers-type arrangement with rear drive sprocket, front idler, five double road wheels, five single return rollers, transverse torsion bars, and shock absorbers on the first and fifth wheels. Sources

The Spanish Army source gives 83 links per track, 57 cm track width, maximum road speed of 65 km/h, 500-600 km road range, 20 CV/t power-to-weight ratio, 0.77 kg/cm2 ground pressure, 60% grade, 30% side slope, 90 cm vertical obstacle, 2.9 m trench, 2.2 m fording without snorkel and 4 m with snorkel. Spanish AMX-30E used American-family radios instead of the French radio fit. The longer source lists AN/VRC-64, AN/VRC-12, AN/VRC-45, AN/VIC-1 intercom, and external telephone. Sources

Protection included steel armor, smoke dischargers, NBC protection using inflatable seals and interior overpressure, and the low silhouette inherited from the French AMX-30. The tank’s protection was not comparable to more heavily armored contemporaries; Spanish sources explicitly note its lighter armor. Sources

Production, operators, and combat record

The production story is one of the strongest parts of the AMX-30E record. The longer official Spanish Army source states that in 1970 France would deliver 19 tanks and Spain would receive a license for 180, with Empresa Nacional Santa Bárbara de Industrias Militares as principal contractor. Industrial responsibilities were distributed across Spain. The source credits the gun and tracks to the Fábrica de Armas de Sevilla, the engine to ENASA in Barcelona, components to manufacturers around Spain, and final assembly to the Fábrica de Artillería at Las Canteras, Seville. Sources

Serial production began in 1974. The first 180 equipped the Brunete Armored Division structure; a 1979 expansion added 100 more and continued to 1983. The first French-delivered tanks were tied to the Legion’s Bakali company and Sahara deployment context. Serial Spanish-built AMX-30E tanks then entered Spanish units from 1974 onward. The Alcázar de Toledo history confirms that in 1977 the RIAC retired M48 tanks and incorporated 104 AMX-30E. It later records reception of reformed AMX-30EM2 tanks on 15 May 1990, with two battalions completed in 1992. Sources

M60A3 TTS deliveries began in 1993 after conventional-forces reductions, and the first Leopard 2E battalion was complete by 19 January 2006 with final Leopard and recovery vehicles delivered in July 2008. The longer official AMX-30E paper says most of the directly delivered tanks were sent to the Sahara, where the Legion tank company was created, and that Bakali was attached to the M48 tactical group of RIAC 61 when it went to Sahara. In tactical terms, the AMX-30E’s strengths were speed, good range, a low turret, and 105 mm firepower. Its combat weaknesses would have been limited armor protection and automotive reliability, especially clutch, gearbox, and cooling issues. Enemy assessments and crew memoir material were not found in the cited sources. This is a useful an unresolved question for book or podcast work: Spanish-language veterans’ accounts, unit journals, and archives from the Bakali company and RIAC 61 may provide the human evidence needed to turn a deployment narrative into a combat-experience narrative. Legacy and historical evidence

The most relevant comparison set is not “all tanks of 1960,” but the vehicles Spain was choosing among or replacing and the AMX-30E’s NATO and Warsaw Pact contemporaries: Leopard 1, M48/M60, Chieftain, T-55/T-62, and French AMX-30B/B2. Sources
