Overview and classification
The A7V Überlandwagen was an unarmored tracked carrier developed within Germany’s A7V program. Its purpose was to move supplies across ground that was difficult for conventional lorries, not to fight as a tank. It shared a chassis lineage with the armored A7V but carried exposed load beds rather than the combat vehicle’s large armored fighting compartment. That relationship explains its place in a tank encyclopedia without changing its actual role. Sources
The available evidence also uses Geländewagen and Raupenlastwagen as associated descriptions. These names cannot automatically be read as evidence of separate designs or production runs. The published boundaries are equally important for the later Hedi or Kokampf armored vehicle: that possible postwar conversion belongs in the related-history discussion, but its identity and construction remain less secure than those of the wartime carrier. The supply problem and the universal chassis
Heavy fighting created a transport problem behind the front as well as on it. Ammunition and other loads had to cross broken surfaces, mud and shell-damaged approaches. Horses and road vehicles remained important, but their limitations encouraged experiments with tracked supply transport. The Überlandwagen applied the A7V program’s machinery to that logistical requirement. Sources
Accounts associate the chassis program with Joseph Vollmer and the German military’s transport-technology organization, and describes a Holt-derived running-gear lineage. Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft’s Berlin-Marienfelde works appears in its account of early chassis development. The attraction was a platform that could support more than one body and military purpose. A frequently repeated order for 100 chassis does not establish a statement that 100 armored tanks or 100 carriers were produced. The available evidence distinguishes the twenty completed armored A7Vs from the broader program and presents conflicting carrier figures. One account places eight early carriers in September 1917 and their arrival in northern France in November; another describes thirty as a planned figure rather than a completed fleet. Arrangement and cargo handling
The carrier’s defining feature was the relationship between its load space and central machinery. Wooden drop-side cargo areas lay toward the front and rear, around the central driving and power installation. Supports could carry weather covers. Neither these covers nor the wooden sides were armor, and photographs of a covered vehicle cannot be captioned as evidence of an armored cargo compartment. Sources
This arrangement provided usable carrying space but also left the load, crew and machinery exposed. The body extended beyond much of the track contact area. On difficult ground, those overhangs could restrict access to slopes and obstacles even when the tracks themselves retained traction. The available evidence therefore separates nominal payload from the ability to deliver that payload over a particular route. Sources
No standard turret or fighting armament is established for the wartime carrier. Ammunition transported as cargo is not an ammunition allowance for a vehicle-mounted gun. Likewise, weapons visible on accompanying soldiers or nearby A7V tanks cannot establish the carrier’s standard equipment. Power, mobility and disputed specifications
Accounts describe two Daimler petrol engines, commonly rated at approximately 100 horsepower each. It links the arrangement to the A7V chassis, while warning against importing every combat-tank transmission detail into a carrier specification without direct documentation. A quoted top road speed of roughly 13–15 kilometres per hour is not a sustained cross-country delivery rate. Sources
Crew and carrying capacity are unresolved. Published accounts in the available evidence give two or three crew, and payload statements range from about three or four tonnes to eight tonnes. These might refer to different definitions or conditions, but The available evidence does not establish a single explanation. They remain separately attributed claims. The practical weaknesses described in the available evidence include high fuel demand, restricted ground clearance and awkward overhangs. Load placement and access around the machinery mattered to day-to-day usefulness. The carrier is not established as a fully successful solution merely because it was tracked. Production and wartime employment
The most defensible production account is smaller and more qualified than the original program’s ambitions. A platform order, an available chassis and a carrier delivered to a unit are different milestones. It is also unsafe to assume that every Überlandwagen began life as a completed armored tank from which the fighting body was removed. Sources
German wartime use was logistical. The account connects the vehicles with tracked motor-transport columns and supply work in France and Flanders. Its Australian War Memorial image lead records an ammunition carrier in the Ypres area in May 1918. That is evidence for the transport role; it does not give the carrier a gun-fighting combat history. Sources
Unit labels and dates remain unconfirmed because abbreviated transport-column designations vary in the available evidence. The relevant military outcome is movement of stores under difficult conditions, rather than tank-versus-tank performance. The armored A7V's battlefield record does not establish the cargo carrier's effectiveness, which depended on delivery performance, fuel consumption, and maintenance. Sources
Postwar conversions and historical significance
Accounts associate Hedi and the Kokampf organization with a possible armored conversion used in postwar Germany. It explicitly treats the chassis history, number built and construction details as less certain. This material remain a qualified related entry until evidence shows whether one or more vehicles can be identified and how they relate to wartime supply chassis. A name attached to a photographed vehicle is not by itself a production-variant designation. Sources
The Überlandwagen’s importance lies in early tracked logistics and in the attempt to obtain several useful military vehicles from a shared mechanical platform. That interpretation does not establish a direct line of descent to later supply carriers. The available evidence has not documented a surviving standard cargo vehicle. Preserved armored A7Vs and replicas illustrate the parent program, but they cannot substitute for an actual Überlandwagen specimen. Sources
The gallery therefore needs a clear hierarchy: a photograph of the cargo carrier first, and armored-A7V photographs only as labeled comparisons.
