A1E1 Independent

A heavy tank that remained an experiment

The A1E1 Independent was a single Vickers-built British heavy-tank prototype intended to combine a central gun with all-round machine-gun defense. Its five turrets made the concept immediately recognizable: one large turret carried a 3-pounder gun, while four smaller turrets carried machine guns. It was completed and tested but never entered production or operational service. Sources

The Independent belonged to the interwar search for a battle tank capable of leading a mechanized formation while defending itself from several directions. Its significance lies in that experiment and the difficulties it exposed. No combat use is established in the cited accounts. Sources

From the 1922 requirement to the 1926 prototype

The project grew out of dissatisfaction with the heavy tanks inherited from the First World War. Rhomboid vehicles could cross substantial obstacles, but their sponson armament and driving arrangements were an awkward basis for a faster, more flexible force. Accounts describe a 1922 War Office concept for a low, long tank with a hull-mounted 3-pounder, side machine guns, a rear engine, and a trench-crossing target of around 2.8 metres. Sources

Vickers proposed a turreted alternative. Published accounts attribute much of the design work to George Thomas Beckham and record a model in May 1925, followed by assembly and completion in 1926. The cited chronology places completion in September and a demonstration in November 1926. Sources

The exact manufacturing location remains uncertain: accounts attribute construction to both Sheffield and Elswick. Vickers' involvement is clear. Subsequent trial modifications affected the brakes, transmission, and running gear. Sources

Five turrets and the problem of coordination

A raised central turret stood above four smaller machine-gun turrets. Three men occupied the main turret, while the smaller turrets had individual operators. Including the driver, the commonly reported crew was eight. This arrangement offered broad weapon coverage but made observation and coordination difficult for the commander. Sources

The main weapon was a 47 mm QF 3-pounder, supported by four.303-inch Vickers machine guns. One rear turret is associated with a high-elevation arrangement for anti-aircraft use, although its effectiveness is not established. Exact ammunition stowage and optical equipment remain uncertain in the available descriptions. Sources

The riveted hull and turret arrangement produced a large vehicle with restricted access between crew positions. Protection figures differ: some accounts give about 28 mm around the fighting compartment with thinner areas elsewhere, while others summarize the range as 13–28 mm. These summaries do not provide a complete plate-by-plate armor plan. Sources

Accounts mention a throat-microphone communication system, but a standard external radio installation is not established. The coordination problem extended beyond communications equipment: the commander had to observe the battlefield and direct widely separated weapon stations inside one armored hull. Sources

Power, running gear and changing trial weights

The Independent used an Armstrong-Siddeley V12 petrol engine. Published ratings differ between 350 and 370 hp. Secondary technical accounts also describe a Swiss Winterthur gearbox and Wilson epicyclic steering, but the equipment and power rating fitted at each stage of the trials are not firmly established. Eight road wheels on each side were arranged in four bogies. Changes to rollers, brakes, and transmission continued during development. Published road speeds of around 20 mph, or 32 km/h, indicated an improvement over wartime heavy tanks. Trials nevertheless exposed problems with steering, trench crossing, consumption, and mechanical reliability. Sources

Reported weights vary with the trial chronology: around 29 tons initially, about 32.5 tons by 1929, and roughly 34 tons in later summaries. These may reflect both changes to the vehicle and different reporting conventions. They do not establish a single tested power-to-weight figure for every configuration. Sources

Cost, trials and the end of development

Only one prototype was completed. Specialist secondary accounts give an initial cost of about £77,500 and describe substantially greater cumulative development expenditure. The exact contract and payment history remains uncertain. Sources

Attempts to improve mechanical performance continued without producing an affordable service tank. The cited chronology ends trials in 1935 and places the vehicle at Bovington afterward. A reputed home-defense role in 1940 is less firmly documented; it does not establish combat service or a complete operational rearmament program. Sources

The surviving tank bears registration T1020 and museum accession E1949.331. Its preservation offers unusually direct evidence of the concept, although restoration history complicates individual details. The claim that its original gun was replaced with a working weapon from a Vickers Medium Mark I remains unconfirmed. Sources

Influence, survival and the photographs

The Independent is often compared with the Soviet T-28 and T-35 and the German Neubaufahrzeug. Their shared multi-turret approach does not by itself prove direct copying or descent. Claims about espionage and transferred drawings remain unconfirmed. The smaller British A6/Medium Mark III program was also separate from Independent production. Sources

The experiment exposed the gap between distributing weapons around a vehicle and creating an effective fighting system. Crew coordination, mechanical demands, and cost were as important as its conspicuous turret layout. The tank's historical importance rests on its design and trial experience rather than a battle record. Sources

The surviving photographs

The illustrations comprise two historical photographs, two modern museum views, and a detail cropped from one of the museum photographs. The close-up shows a particular feature of the preserved vehicle rather than another independent example. The modern views document the survivor as photographed, not its condition during the 1920s trials. Sources

The IWM-related photographic records carry a 1925 attribution, whereas the cited construction chronology places completion in 1926. That dating discrepancy remains unresolved. Sources
