10TP

The 10TP was Poland's attempt to turn the promise of a fast, Christie-influenced tank into a practical domestic fighting vehicle.

A prototype for a more mobile Polish army

The 10TP was Poland's attempt to turn the promise of a fast, Christie-influenced tank into a practical domestic fighting vehicle. One prototype was tested in 1938–39. It combined a relatively powerful engine, large road wheels, and a gun-armed turret with the ability to run on tracks or wheels, but it did not enter production or become available to Polish field formations. The project addressed the desire for greater speed and operational flexibility than small tankettes and existing light tanks could provide. Christie concepts influenced the design, but the 10TP was not an unchanged American vehicle manufactured under license. Polish engineers developed their own arrangement after unsuccessful attempts to acquire the desired American tank or rights. Sources

A long development and a short trial career

Early Polish work on a Christie-style tank began around the start of the 1930s. Preliminary drawings and an interrupted development effort preceded renewed work in March 1935 by a team associated with Rudolf Gundlach. Sources

Assembly took place at experimental-workshop and PZInż facilities at Ursus during 1937–38. The cited chronology gives completion in July 1938 and an early extended run on 16 August, with trials continuing into spring 1939. Tests exposed transmission, clutch, cooling, and fuel-system problems. Further development was necessary to turn the elaborate mobility arrangement into a reliable military vehicle. Sources

Four men and a gun-armed turret

The driver and hull machine-gunner sat forward, with a two-man turret near the center and the engine at the rear. The four-man crew divided hull duties from turret duties. The turret drew on the Polish 7TP program, although the complete tanks were different designs. Sources

Armament consisted of a 37 mm Bofors-pattern tank gun and two rifle-caliber machine guns. Armor was light and varied around the vehicle. Exact ammunition stowage, sights, and observation fittings remain uncertain. Gundlach's involvement alone does not establish the installation of every optical device associated with his work. The attraction and burden of convertible running

The American LaFrance petrol engine was substantially more powerful than engines in Poland's small tankettes. Accounts distinguish approximately 210 horsepower in the installation from higher quoted ratings. The discrepancy remains unresolved; nominal engine power and output in a particular vehicle may describe different conditions. Sources

Removing the tracks allowed travel on the large road wheels. Wheeled running promised greater road speed and reduced track wear, while tracks remained available for other conditions. Additional steering and drive arrangements complicated the vehicle, and switching modes required work by the crew. Reported speeds and ranges vary with operating mode, test conditions, and source. What existed, and what did not enter service

Only one prototype is established. No series-production fleet, export service, or combat employment is documented. Polish test use was not the same as issue to a field formation, and the projected successor was not another completed 10TP available for battle. Sources

The prototype's final fate is uncertain. Accounts of destruction or disposal remain unconfirmed, and no survivor is established. The interruption of Polish development in 1939 does not demonstrate that the prototype took part in combat. Modern drawings and models are reconstructions rather than direct records of its completed configuration. Sources

The lesson carried into the next project

The trials showed that a fast tank required more than engine power and a promising suspension. A dependable drivetrain, adequate cooling, protection, and equipment that could be manufactured and maintained were equally important. Accounts connect those lessons to a tracked-only successor, conventionally called 14TP, which would abandon the special wheel-running arrangement. Sources
