The War Memorial of Korea

The War Memorial of Korea in Seoul combines national commemoration with extensive military-history exhibitions. Its large indoor galleries and outdoor equipment display interpret Korean military history, the Korean War, allied participation, and later Republic of Korea service.

Museum story

The War Memorial of Korea is simultaneously a national memorial and a large military-history museum. It was created to preserve the memory of conflicts involving Korea while using those histories to emphasize the cost of war and the importance of peace. The institution therefore balances commemoration, education, national history, and the display of military technology.

Its scale allows the Korean War to be presented within a much longer history rather than as an isolated episode. Indoor halls combine artifacts, documents, weapons, and narrative exhibits, while the outdoor area uses aircraft, artillery, tanks, and other large equipment to show the material scale of modern warfare.

Collection character

National tourism and government information describe a very large collection with thousands of artifacts and an outdoor exhibition of major weapons systems, including tanks and self-propelled guns. For this wave, the Armor Archive is registering the institution but not creating exact vehicle relationships until current official material identifies individual armored-vehicle types with enough precision for family matching.

What to expect

This is a large site that combines solemn memorial spaces with conventional museum galleries and an outdoor equipment park. Visitors focused on armor should still allow time for the Korean War interpretation because it provides the operational and human context for the displayed machines. Outdoor viewing conditions will also vary with Seoul weather.
