Cobbaton Combat Collection

Cobbaton Combat Collection is a privately developed North Devon collection of military vehicles, artillery, weapons, equipment, uniforms, and home-front material. Its scope is centered on the Second World War but extends from the Boer War through the First Gulf War, with British, Canadian, Russian, and other objects represented.

Museum story

Cobbaton began as Preston Isaac’s personal collecting interest and opened to the public in 1981. The collection continued to grow into a broad survey of twentieth-century military life, combining heavy equipment with the everyday objects that surrounded service and civil defense.

Its North Devon setting and private origins distinguish it from a national military museum. The displays reflect decades of collecting and preservation, with the strongest concentration in the Second World War and the British military experience.

Collection character

The collection includes tanks, other military vehicles, guns, artillery, weapons, helmets, uniforms, inert ordnance, communications equipment, and extensive home-front material. Canadian and Russian equipment broadens a collection otherwise strongly associated with British service.

Exact vehicle relationships are being withheld until a current collection inventory or institution-level object list can support them. The Archive will not convert older visitor photographs or informal identifications into present-day holdings claims.

What to expect

Cobbaton is best understood as a dense private collection rather than a polished linear national narrative. Visitors interested in vehicles can also examine the supporting material that explains supply, civil defense, uniforms, weapons, and daily wartime life.

Access is the critical planning issue. The collection has moved away from its former regular tourist schedule and now announces specific event openings, so verify dates, entry arrangements, facilities, and accessibility directly before travel.
